Aug. 4: Dawley Dog Day

Whether you shop with your dog or leave it at home, more than a dozen Dawley Farm Village businesses will be waiting with freebies, games and giveaways to mark the “dog days of summer” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Click here for the full list.

Aug. 4: Eastbank Block Party

The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday with live music on a warm summer night at the August Eastbank Block Party presented by Pendar Properties. Entertain the kids with an array of yard games while you listen to Landon Weis, Neon Horizon and headliner Cask Mates. Food trucks include Backyard BBQ, Wagoo Burger, Ollies, Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen and The Ice Cream Truck – SDSU Ice Cream.

Aug. 4: Canine art show

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society will host its first art show Friday in the Third Eye Gallery at Vishnu Bunny Tattoo & Piercing, 202 S. Phillips Ave. The event will include art, beer and hot dogs. Come at 5 p.m. for face painting, animal sketching and the chance to meet a shelter pet. Hot Dog, It’s an Art Show begins at 7 p.m.

Aug.  5: Artist Market Brunch

The Artist Market Brunch now will be on the first Saturday of each month, with new art and craft vendors monthly at 123 W. 10th St. Brunch will be served by Overboard Charcuterie from noon to 3 p.m. Options vary by month but can include breakfast burritos, croissants, parfait cups and more. There also will be drink specials.

Aug. 5: Bazaart Show

Shop work from 18 local artists from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday outside Sunny’s Pizzeria, 1801 S. Walts Ave., at this second annual event hosted by Prints & Repeat. Click here to learn more.

Aug. 5: Book event

Laura Jean Pulscher, a Dell Rapids wife and mother of three living with ALS, has written her first book using assistive devices. The release of “Stories” will run from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the LaDelle and Fourth Coffeehouse on East Fourth Street in downtown Dell Rapids.

Aug. 6: Picnic and games

Grab a picnic blanket and take part in an afternoon of family fun at Riverdale Park, 2000 E. 24th St., from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, hosted by Sioux Falls Parks & Recrecation. Activities include tug of war, potato sack races, three-legged races and more. Light snacks and water will be provided, but you can pack a picnic basket. No registration is required.

Aug. 8-9: Gardening

Master Gardener Jerry Mills tends the teaching garden at the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum, 1900 S. Perry Place. From 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, he will share his knowledge and answer your questions. And from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, you can learn about growing garlic. You can register here.

Aug. 9: Mayor’s Fitness Court Challenge

To celebrate the addition of the Rotary Park fitness court, Mayor Paul TenHaken, Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation and GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness will host the Mayor’s Fitness Court Challenge at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 2408 E. 26th St. After opening  remarks, GreatLIFE staff will lead a warmup to prepare the community to compete for various records, including most pushups, longest bar hang and most pullups. Records will be given out for each category for males and females in age groups of 13–17, 18–30, 31–49 and 50-plus. The record holder for each event and age category will be recognized on social media and receive a certificate and city of Sioux Falls swag. The Rotary Park fitness court has 28 stations. These include exercise bikes, an arm-pedal bike, a cross-trainer machine, box jump stations, pushup bars, pullup bars, climbers/monkey bars, kettlebell stations, situp/abdominal benches, speed ladders and agility stations. 

Aug. 9: Back to School Bash

To celebrate the 2023-24 school year, South Dakota Urban Indian Health will be have its third annual Back to School Bash in the parking lot of its Sioux Falls clinic from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday for hot dogs, games, immunizations and well-child visits. There also will be vendor booths and door prizes throughout the event. Attendance also qualifies you for a chance to win a bike. Representatives from The Banquet will be present to take registrations for backpacks that will be distributed at a later date. The clinic is at 1200 N. West Ave.
