Road Report: July 13, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Marion Road: The outside southbound lane of Marion Road closed between 16th and 18th streets on July 9 to allow crews to repair a gas leak. The west sidewalk may be closed at times, and pedestrian traffic will be detoured when necessary. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Western Avenue: The outside southbound lane of Western Avenue closed between 49th and 50th streets on July 10 to allow crews to perform storm drainage repairs. One lane of southbound traffic will be maintained in the inside driving lane at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Cliff Avenue: The outside southbound lane closure on Cliff Avenue between 77th Street and Veterans Parkway will be extended to July 17. The west sidewalk is closed, and pedestrian traffic is detoured to the east sidewalk.
49th Street: Bridge maintenance work is underway on the 49th Street bridge over Interstate 29.

Work on this project includes repairs to the bridge deck, concrete barriers, concrete joints and approaches. There also will be a new pedestrian railing and a low slump concrete overlay on the bridge.

49th Street is closed between Terry and Solberg avenues during this work.

Traffic should use 41st or 57th streets as alternate routes.

This work is expected to be complete in late August or early September.
60th Street North: A short street maintenance project started last week on 60th Street North between Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229.

Crews milled off the top 2ninches of the old asphalt surface and are in the process of installing a new 2-inch layer of asphalt to provide a smoother ride for motorists and extend the overall life of the street.

60th Street North is closed between Cliff and Bahnson avenues during this work.

Traffic is being detoured to Benson Road.

This work is expected to be complete later this week.

Cliff & I-229: The work at the Cliff Avenue and I-229 interchange continues to make progress.

Crews are busy with grading and gravel installation on the interstate and are finishing up the structural supports for the new northbound I-229 bridge.

The bridge girders are scheduled to be installed this week:
-
- Beginning at 8 p.m. today, the northbound right lane of I-229 will be closed at the Cliff interchange to allow crews to install bridge girders. The lane is expected to reopen to traffic at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The northbound right lane of I-229 will be closed again at 8 p.m. Tuesday and reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
- Beginning at 8 p.m. today, Cliff Avenue will be fully closed to traffic at I-229 to allow crews to install bridge girders. Cliff is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
- Beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday, Cliff Avenue will be fully closed to traffic at I-229 to allow crews to install bridge girders. Cliff is expected to reopen to traffic around noon Saturday.
After the bridge girders are set, work will begin on constructing the bridge deck.

Concrete paving on I-229 and Cliff Avenue also is expected to begin soon.

All work is expected to be substantially complete and all lanes open to traffic in November.

Final clean up and restoration work may extend into the spring of 2027.

What’s next
Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane on Sycamore Avenue will be closed from Fanelle Avenue to 10th Street/Arrowhead Parkway to allow crews to construct a new driveway for Fire Station No. 2. Two southbound lanes will be maintained through the work zone by shifting traffic to the east, using the inside southbound lane and the center turn lane. This work is expected to be complete in late August.
Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, the inside northbound lane, the inside southbound lane and the center turn lane on Sycamore Avenue will be closed just north of Sixth Street to allow crews to complete water main and concrete repairs. No southbound left turns will be allowed from Sycamore onto Sixth during this closure. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
Sheldon Lane: Beginning today, Sheldon Lane will be closed at Kiwanis Avenue to allow crews to make storm drainage repairs. Northbound and southbound traffic will remain open on Kiwanis. The recreation trail on the west side of Kiwanis also will be closed. Trail users should follow the posted detour route. This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.
33rd Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the south sidewalk along 33rd Street will be closed between Prairie and Summit avenues to allow crews to perform crane work. Parking along this area also will be restricted. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day Tuesday.
