Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

85th & I-29: Work is off to a good start at the future 85th Street interchange on Interstate 29.

This interchange will be the area’s fourth diverging diamond interchange and is a joint project of the South Dakota Department of Transportation, cities of Sioux Falls and Tea, and Lincoln County.

Crews are working on water main installation, grading, structural steel and bridge piles.

Installation of geofoam is scheduled to begin this week.

Geofoam is a lightweight fill material and is being used over the existing Lewis & Clark water main to minimize stresses from the additional soil load of the interchange over this pipeline.

This will be the second time a geofoam material has been used in the Sioux Falls area – the other location is on the 12th Street bridge near Grange Avenue.

Work on this project is expected to be complete in late 2027.

South Veterans Parkway: Work resumed in early March on South Veterans Parkway between Cliff and Sycamore avenues.

Crews finished installing and inspecting the 136,000 pounds, or 68 tons, of stainless steel reinforcement on the new bridge over the railroad tracks just east of Cliff Avenue ahead of pouring concrete for the new bridge last week.

It took over 10 hours for the crew of 25 to place 80 truckloads of concrete for this bridge!

Other work that will occur this year includes concrete paving, striping, street light installation, pedestrian trail construction and landscaping.

Work is expected to be substantially complete by the end of the year, with final completion expected in the spring of 2027.

What’s next

I-229 & Cliff: Beginning today, lane closures will be in place for southbound traffic on Interstate 229 between 26th Street and Minnesota Avenue to allow crews to install traffic control devices, concrete barriers and pavement markings for two-way traffic in the southbound lanes to prepare for the next phase of the interchange reconstruction project at Cliff Avenue. The lane closures will shift as contractors progress with installing the barriers and pavement markings. This work will continue throughout the week.

41st & Phillips: Beginning at 8:30 a.m. today, the eastbound and southbound through lanes at the intersection of 41st Street and Phillips Avenue will be shifted to utilize the left turn lanes on both sides of the intersection to allow crews to perform utility work. Two-way traffic will be maintained in all directions at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about three days.

Russell Street: Beginning today, the outside and center eastbound lanes on Russell Street will be closed between West and Minnesota avenues to allow crews to perform concrete repairs, curb and gutter repairs, and joint resealing. One lane of traffic will be maintained in the inside eastbound lane. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closure on eastbound Russell Street will vary between West and Minnesota. At a minimum, one eastbound lane of traffic will remain open at all times. The westbound lanes will not be impacted at this time. The work in this area is anticipated to be complete in early May. Work on Russell Street will be ongoing through October between Interstate 29 and Minnesota Avenue.

26th & Veterans: Beginning today, the intersection of 26th Street and Veterans Parkway will function as a four-way stop with stop signs to allow the contractor to work on the traffic signals at theintersection. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.

18th & Veterans: Beginning on Tuesday, the intersection of 18th Street and Veterans Parkway will function as a four-way stop with stop signs to allow the contractor to work on the traffic signals at this intersection. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.

I-229 & Cliff: Beginning on April 6, northbound traffic on Interstate 229 will be switched to the southbound lanes between Minnesota Avenue and 26th Street to allow crews to begin work on the next phase of the interchange reconstruction project at Cliff Avenue. At that time, the northbound on-ramp and northbound off-ramp at Cliff  will be closed. Northbound drivers should use Minnesota Avenue and 26th Street as detour routes to access Cliff Avenue. Traffic on Cliff Avenue will not be impacted at this time. Work is expected to be substantially complete and all lanes open to traffic near the end of the year. Final completion of all work is expected in the spring of 2027.

Marion Road: Beginning on April 6,  Marion Road will be closed from Memory Lane to 84th Street North to allow crews to construct a new bridge over the BNSF railroad tracks. Work will include new water main, storm drainage infrastructure, a new bridge, concrete paving, street lighting and traffic signals. Work is expected to be complete in late 2027.
