Road Report: July 6, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Veterans Parkway: Crews continue to make progress on three improvement projects along Veterans Parkway between 18th and 57th streets: concrete repairs and joint sealing, pavement marking improvements and traffic signal upgrades.

The contractor currently is completing the concrete repair and joint resealing project in the driving lanes and shoulder areas on both the northbound and southbound sides of Veterans Parkway. Crews are removing the old joint sealant, applying a soy-based concrete sealer to the joint areas and resealing them with hot-pour joint sealant.

This type of preventive maintenance is a cost-effective way to extend the life of the pavement and help keep roads in good condition. This work is expected to continue through mid-July. Once the concrete repair and joint resealing project is complete, crews will begin the pavement marking project by installing new lane striping.

The striping will accommodate an additional travel lane and dual left-turn lanes at select intersections. These improvements are designed to reduce congestion, improve intersection operations and enhance traffic flow.

Following the pavement marking project, the traffic signal project will be completed by uncovering and placing the new traffic signal heads into operation to match the updated lane configuration. All three projects are expected to be completed later this summer.
20th Street: Work is progressing on 20th Street between Cliff and Seventh avenues through the Avera McKennan campus. Crews have completed water main installation, sanitary sewer installation and paving on the east side of the project up to Ninth Avenue.

The intersection of 20th and Ninth is closed to allow crews to continue reconstructing 20th Street through the Avera McKennan campus.

One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on 20th Street west from Cliff Avenue and east from Seventh Avenue, with both directions ending near Ninth Avenue. Through traffic should use 17th or 26th streets as alternate routes. Access to the Avera parking ramps along 20th is available from Cliff.

Access to Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital and Avera Plaza 4 is available from Seventh Avenue. Access to the Avera McKennan emergency department will not be impacted. However, motorists should use either 17th or 26th streets to access the emergency department entrance off Seventh. All work on this project is expected to be completed in November.

Slurry seal street maintenance: The city’s annual slurry seal program kicked off last week.
A slurry seal is a cost-effective, preventive maintenance treatment that extends the life of asphalt streets in good condition. A ½-inch layer of asphalt emulsion, fine aggregate (small rock) and additives is applied over the existing pavement to create a new wearing surface, seal minor cracks and help protect the pavement from water and weather damage.

This treatment helps preserve streets in good condition and delay the need for more costly repairs or reconstruction in the future.

This year, the city is applying slurry seal to approximately 900 blocks of neighborhood streets as part of its ongoing pavement-preservation program.

These efforts maximize the life of existing streets and make the most efficient use of taxpayer dollars.

The slurry seal process is fast-moving, with most streets reopening to traffic within a few hours after application and typically within one day.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-September.

Take a closer look at the process here:
Residents may experience temporary lane closures and parking restrictions while work is underway.
Please follow posted signage and avoid driving on freshly applied slurry seal until streets have reopened.

Revere Drive: Revere Drive closed July 2 between Brennan Court and Highline Avenue to allow crews to install utilities. The work is expected to be completed and traffic control removed by the end of the day on Friday.
Sycamore Avenue: As part of the South Veterans Parkway project, Sycamore Avenue reopened to traffic from 69th to 85th streets on July 2. South Veterans Parkway is a joint project between the city of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation. This work is part of construction of the second segment of South Veterans Parkway from Cliff to Sycamore avenues. Construction on this section of new road began in March 2025 and will continue through this year. Construction of the southern portion of Veterans Parkway is occurring in segments, with each segment taking about two years to complete. For information on traffic impacts, visit southveteransparkway.com.
Cliff Avenue: The Cliff Avenue southbound outside lane closure between 77th Street and Veterans Parkway will be extended to Friday to allow the contractor to install utilities. The west sidewalk is closed, and pedestrian traffic is detoured to the east sidewalk.
What’s next
60th Street North: Beginning today, 60th Street North will be closed between Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 to allow crews to mill and overlay the street. Traffic will be detoured to Benson Road via Bahnson and Cliff avenues. Local traffic will be maintained for the businesses along 60th Street North. The work is anticipated to be complete by the end of July.
Kiwanis Avenue: Beginning today, the northbound outside lane of Kiwanis Avenue will have intermittent closures between Ninth and 33rd streets to allow the contractor to do repairs on utility poles. This work is expected to be completed by the end of the day on July 13.
Red Oak Drive: Beginning today, Red Oak Drive will be closed from 26th Street to Cattail Drive to allow crews to perform various concrete repairs. Motorists should use Highline Avenue to enter and exit the neighborhood. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.
Euclid Avenue: Beginning today, Euclid Avenue will be closed at the north side of the 15th Street intersection to allow crews to install a valley gutter across Euclid. Traffic will be reduced to one lane on 15th eastbound through the intersection, with stop signs to control traffic. Motorists should use 14th Street to enter and exit the neighborhood. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.
Veterans Parkway: Beginning today, the inside northbound lane of Veterans Parkway between Paddington and Maple streets will be closed to allow the contractor to complete concrete repairs. The repairs are expected to be finished in one week.
Main Avenue: Starting on Tuesday, the sidewalk along the east side of Main Avenue will be closed from Russell to Brookings streets to allow the contractor to work on utilities. Pedestrian traffic will be directed to the west side of Main in this area. Work is anticipated to be complete within three weeks.
33rd Street: Beginning on Tuesday, 33rd Street will be closed on the west side of Veterans Parkway beginning at 7 p.m. to allow crews to complete concrete pavement repairs. This closure is anticipated to be in place for three days. Crews also will be working in the Veterans Parkway and 26th Street intersection and Veterans Parkway and 41st Street intersection during the overnight hours of 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday, weather permitting. These intersections will remain open but may have turning movements restricted.
