New zoo event Saturday brings together artists, animals, seasonal fun

Toast s’mores, enjoy holiday lights, and support local art at a new event for all ages this Small Business Saturday at the Great Plains Zoo.

Creative Creatures Art Show will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26.

“This is the community’s zoo, and we want to become part of the Sioux Falls holiday weekend tradition,” said Denise DePaolo, director of public relations and engagement.

“It’s important to us to incorporate our education animals and conservation messaging, as well as bring in the creative community and spotlight local artists on Small Business Saturday.”

Visit education animals in the lobby, grab a hot chocolate – including adult versions for those 21 and older! – and stroll through the zoo’s snow monkey, Komodo dragon and Asian cat viewing areas, which will be turned into art galleries for the event.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy work from local artists while you’re surrounded by twinkling holiday lights.

“As far as I know, we’ve never had an event like this at the zoo,” DePaolo said.

“The goal is to provide a one-of-a-kind art experience with a hint of holiday magic. Untitled.10 is partnering with us to bring work from many local artists into spaces where we’d traditionally view animals. For many attendees, this will be their first time visiting the zoo after-hours, and we want to build on that natural excitement.”

On the plaza, you’ll find fire pits ready for roasting s’mores when you purchase a S’mores for Snow Leopards kit.

“Sales from those will benefit the zoo’s snow leopard conservation program, which will send team members to Nepal this month to work with locals in the field,” DePaolo said. “We hope people bundle up and arrive ready to have a special evening.”

Tickets are $5 online, early and on the day of the event, and they’re $7 for walk-ups.
