April 3: Red capes, red lights

Sometimes heroes DO wear capes. Sioux Falls CASA will host its ninth annual Red Cape Event and honor Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The State Theatre marquee, the Arc of Dreams and the falls at Falls Park will be lighted red. It starts at the State Theatre, and CASA will have the capes.

April 3: Poetry techniques

You can rhyme if you make the time. And the time is 6 p.m. Thursday when Welsh poet Sion Lidster, owner of Full Circle Book Co-op, will teach techniques for poetry writers. Lidster is a published poet. The event will take place at Sufu Creative, 218 W. 13th St.

April 4: Watercolor reception

More than 100 artists in the tri-state area belong to the Great Plains Watercolor Society, and during April, you can see their work on display at Rehfelds Modern Fine Art & Framing, 431 N. Phillips Ave. All talent levels are showcased. The show runs through April 30, and a public reception will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rehfelds.

April 4: Country dancing

We’ll see you on the dance floor when the Dakota Country Dance Club hosts a night of country music and dancing at the Icon Event Hall, 402 N. Main Ave. The Marksmen will take the stage from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, with DJ HOuska keeping the party going from 10 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $15, or you can join the dance club at the door for $25.

April 4-5: Sing like a pirate

Shiver your timbers when the Spotlight Theatre Company sponsors “How to Be a Pirate” at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Washington Pavilion’s Belbas Theater. The raucous pirate party will include story and song. Tickets cost $16 and can be purchased here.

April 6: Reptile Expo

The first Sioux Falls Reptile Expo will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. It will include the chance to meet geckos, other reptiles and reptile lovers from the region; see educational displays; participate in activities; and shop at a variety of vendors. Tickets will cost $12 at the door; children 3 and younger will get in for free.

April 8: Favorite fabrics

Weaving, dyeing, embellishment and printing on textiles goes back centuries in East Asia and South Asia, continuing today. Members of the Crossthreads Fiberworks Guild will share examples such as kimonos, saris, modern embroidery and traditional dyed examples from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Siouxland Libraries’ Caille Branch, 4100 S. Carnegie Circle.
