4 new things to eat this week

Are you the type who’s first in the door at every new restaurant opening?

Regardless, you’ve always got a new option thanks to the Sioux Falls restaurant scene. And the pandemic hasn’t changed that.

Here are our top four new things to eat this week — or if that’s flavor overload, maybe this coming month.

Here’s the good news/bad news on the newest place to grab a doughnut. The morning it opened, Mr. Donuts sold out of 2,500 doughnuts in about three hours. And, if you work downtown, it might be on your commute route along Minnesota Avenue.

But there’s also a drive-thru, and the owners quickly realized they need to bake more. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the signature Texas kolache. It’s a cheddar sausage wrapped in sweet dough and fried.

Japanese meets Hawaiian in this fast-growing restaurant chain that started in Sioux Falls in recent weeks. Poke Picks plans several locations and has two open now: on Phillips Avenue downtown and at 41st and Western.

We asked an early fan for a recommendation, and she had a great one: this bento box, which you can get from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This one included black pepper New York strip and chicken, plus a house salad, California roll, rice and fried spring roll.

Did you know Sioux Falls now has an Argentinian restaurant? You can read more about Tarquin here and find it at Cliff and Benson. The whole menu is worth exploring, but don’t miss the bakery. These milhojas combine stacked layers of puffed pastry with strawberry, custard, buttercream frosting and dulce de leche.

And finally, it’s not new, but in honor of Look’s Marketplace appearing on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” this Friday, how about one of their menu items?

We love all their pizzas, but try the Motor City Pizza for a different take on a pie. Think salami, pepperoni, sausage and roasted mushrooms on a garlic butter crust — topped with hot red sauce, ricotta cream and fresh basil.
