The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.

July 13: Skylab

Discover the night sky and explore the constellations — with no pesky insects — at the Starlab Inflatable Planetarium. It is open at the Old Courthouse Museum, 200 W. Sixth St., at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $2 per person. The event is for those 5 and older only. Groups of eight or more should register in advance at 605-367-4210.

July 14: The Lot art show

This summer art series returns to the patio at DaDa Gastropub, 402 N. Main Ave. It’s free to attend, show or sell work as an artist and runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday on the patio and through the garage door. There’s a full dinner menu and beverage service available from 5 to 11 p.m.

July 14: Red, White & Blue Ball

Cheer for the red, white and blue while wearing red, white and blue Friday on the dance floor at El Riad Shrine, 510 S. Phillips Ave. The Bill Gibson Band will play danceable big band music. A dance lesson will start at 6:45 p.m. with the band playing at 7:30 p.m.

July 14-15: Bulls & BBQ

You’ll find bulls and barbecue at a rodeo at The Country Apple Orchard 27249 Old Orchard Road near Harrisburg, on Friday and Saturday. Gates open for the Bulls & BBQ Rodeo with Raise ’em Rank and food will be served starting at 4 p.m. The bulls start at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.

July 15: Native Walk

Mary Jo Wegener Arboretum will host presenters naturalist Andrea Porter and Michael Wanbdi Gdeska, or Spotted Eagle, who will connect the natural history of the Great Plains with cultural practices. Wanbdi Gdeska, a member of the Ihanktonwan Oyate, or Yankton-Sioux, tribe, will share his experience from a Native American perspective in developing a spiritual relationship with all of creation. The walk will include the sacred ceremony of azilya, or smudging. Porter will explain how plants, animals and the landscape serve an important purpose. The event is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday; purchase tickets here.

July 16: Crafted — Plant swap

Retailers and restaurants in The Cascade at Falls Park have teamed up to host their first Crafted event at noon Sunday.  It will give area plant lovers a chance to gather, connect and exchange not only plant clippings but also full plants and even seeds. Come prepared with one or two pest-free plants — or even three — for trading. At noon, sign in at La Luna Cafe, grab brunch, then walk to Severance Brewing Co. The meet-and-greet starts there at 1 p.m., and the swap begins at 2.

At 3 p.m., there will be a propagation demonstration and makers market with plant-centric vendors at Rose and Eugene Presents.

Upcoming: July 21-23

Brandon will host its 50th birthday celebration over three days, starting July 21 with a daylong scavenger hunt. The day includes a Battle of the Badges blood drive with a DJ from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Zoomobile at 10 a.m. at the Brandon Library and free swimming from 5 to 9 p.m. There’s also a city picnic for the first 500 people, trivia, a movie at Aspen Park and fireworks.
