The week ahead: Jan. 26-Feb. 1
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
Jan. 26-28: Reefer Madness
Take a trip (get it?) back into history with this musical spoof of the cult classic film “Reefer Madness.” It will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Belbas Theater at the Washington Pavilion. The event is sponsored by Downtown Sioux Falls Inc., the Pavilion and The Good Night Theatre Collective. Get tickets here.

Jan. 27: Improv Falls
Enjoy quick wits and funny folks when Improv Falls begins at 7 p.m. Friday at at Icon Event Hall + Lounge, 402 N. Main Ave. It’s comedy that’s made up on the spot. You offer the topic, they’ll come up with the humor. Get tickets here.

Jan. 27-28: Cornhole competition
Who says cornhole games are just for summer? Take a quick trip to Rock Rapids, Iowa, to watch or take part in the American Cornhole League division tournament. It takes place at the Lyon County Fairgrounds on South Fifth Avenue. For information, visit its Facebook page.

Jan. 28-29: ‘Turning Red’ and a party
The State Theatre is showing “Turning Red,” the animated story of a 13-year-old going through a tumultuous time, at 11 a.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. Moviegoers who bring in an unopened box of period products such as pads and tampons will receive a free small popcorn. Those items will go to help visitors to The Banquet. The movie also is showing Feb. 4, 5, 11 and 12.

Jan. 28-29: Model trains
The Dakota Southeastern Division Model Railroad Club will be set up at the Siouxland Libraries’ Downtown Library from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. You’ll have the chance to explore the DSED’s giant HO-scale model railroad and operate on two switching layouts. The N-scale T-Trak also will be on display. Club members can explain that all at the event.

Feb. 1: Author talk
April White will discuss Sioux Falls as it once was when she talks about her book, “The Divorce Colony: How Women Revolutionized Marriage and Found Freedom on the American Frontier.” It’s a totally true story and one that gives an insight into the city’s past. The event is 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Siouxland Libraries’ Downtown Library.

Coming up: Feb. 17-18
Bundle up your best stuffed buddy, and bring it to Chick-fil-A for a sleepover with the Chick-fil-A Cow. The gathering begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 with a drop-off party that includes a craft and bedtime story. The stuffed animals’ party will end at 9 a.m. Feb. 18 when breakfast is served, and goody bags are handed out. Check the Facebook page for rules and regulations.
