The week ahead: Dec. 7-13
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
Dec. 7 and beyond: Crazy for Christmas
After excessive snow and illness caused last year’s Myers Crazy for Christmas display to be canceled, the lights and inflatables at 1819 S. Hawthorne Ave. will be open for three hours a night through the holidays. More than 300 inflatables have been put in place so far, with more than 250 available to be added. On Luminary Lane night, 5 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 17, free hot chocolate will be served with small prizes for children.

Dec. 7 and beyond: Mystery of the Christmas Star
“Mystery of the Christmas Star” will be shown at the Wells Fargo CineDome & Sweetman Planetarium in the Washington Pavilion. The educational holiday film is a modern retelling of the Christmas story and uncovers an explanation for the star the wise men followed to find the baby Jesus. Tickets are on sale now; visit the Pavilion website for showtimes.

Dec. 8-9: Night on Broadway
The Rainbow Chorus of Sioux Falls will present “A Night on Broadway” at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 300 S. Minnesota Ave. Favorite Broadway hits such as “For Good” from “Wicked,” “You Will Be Found” from “Dear Evan Hansen” and Medleys from “Mama Mia” and “The Phantom of the Opera” will be performed. Half of the freewill donations collected at the performances will go to the organization Transformation Project.

Dec. 9 and 10: Zoo activities
Crossthreads Fiberworks Guild will work with wool in the Great Plains Zoo lobby from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Check out the process from sheep to finished product with carding, spinning and crocheting demonstrations using wool from the zoo’s sheep and alpacas. Visitors can purchase a skein of ultra-exclusive zoo sheep or alpaca yarn, available for the first time. Supplies are extremely limited; proceeds benefit the care of the zoo’s farm animals. There’s also a special event at the zoo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday: Santa will pay a visit. The event will include entertainment from the Premiere Playhouse cast of “A Christmas Carol,” a visit from the Grinch, holiday crafts, S’Mores for Conservation available for purchase and special enrichment for the animals.

Coming up: Dec. 14
Nature photographer Marty Dewitt will offer tips and tricks to capturing great outdoors shots at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at Good Earth State Park at Blood Run. This program will take place inside the park’s theater, so space is limited. Call 605-213-1036 to reserve a place.

Coming up: Dec. 14-16
The Good Night Theatre Collective will present a musical radio play adaption of “Miracle on 34th Street,” the classic story of the man who might be Santa Claus. Performances Dec. 14 and 15 are sold out, but limited tickets remain for the show at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in the Washington Pavilion’s Schulte Room. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased here.
