Jan. 1: First-day hikes
If you want to start 2025 getting in tune with nature, you have a couple of options. At 1 p.m. Wednesday, a guided 1-mile hike will begin at Good Earth State Park at Blood Run, 26924 480th Ave. At 2 p.m. Wednesday, a guided 1-mile hike will explore Big Sioux Recreation Area at 410 W. Park St., Brandon. A South Dakota volunteer naturalist will lead both hikes. Participants should meet at the picnic shelter. Dress for the weather with warm layers and good hiking shoes or boots. If the temperature including windchill is zero or below, the hikes will be canceled.

Jan. 3: Concert series
Humbletown, with what it describes as haunting vocal harmonies, a melodic clawhammer banjo and high-energy flatpicking guitar, will perform from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the Old Courthouse Museum, 200 W. Sixth St., as part of the Winter Concert Series. The free concert will take place in the historic courtroom. You can bring your lunch.

Jan. 3: First Friday
Come to the Washington Pavilion’s Kirby Science Discovery Center and the Visual Arts Center for Free First Friday when there’s no admission fee. There are more than 100 exhibits and eight art galleries to explore. Admission is first come, first served. Check in at the box office. Children younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult. It will run from 5 to 8 p.m.

Jan. 4: Salute to Elliott Smith
Local performers Micah Kittelson, Jon Bakken, Granola and Xavier Pastrano will be featured during An Evening with Elliott Smith, a tribute to the American singer-songwriter who died in 2003. Doors will open at 8 p.m. Saturday, with the music starting at 8:30 p.m., at Icon Event Hall, 402 N. Main Ave. Cost is $20 plus a freewill donation for National Alliance for Mental Illness South Dakota.
