Aug. 19: Kids Activity Day at the Old Courthouse Museum

The Old Courthouse Museum is hosting another Kids Activity Day, this time themed Making Music. Kids will get the chance to build their own musical instrument while learning about history. There are two sessions available, one from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and another from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children age 3 to 12 are invited to participate. Register by calling 605-367-4210.

Aug. 19-22: Paranormal Cirque

Something spooky is headed to Sioux Falls a few months before Halloween. The traveling Paranormal Cirque, presented by Cirque Italia, will be in town at The Empire Mall for six shows. The Paranormal Cirque is a self-proclaimed “crazy yet fun fusion between circus, theatre and cabaret.” The show is open to those 17 and older, or age 13-16 with someone 21 or older. The show will include acrobatics, horror themes and European-style circus performances. Tickets for all six shows are available online.

Aug. 21: Bark in the Park

The annual Bark in the Park 3k/5k Fun Run is taking place at Dunham Park. The event, which is hosted by the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, also includes pet contests such as Best Dressed, Best Tricks and dog musical chairs as well as different business vendors before the race. Bark in the Park is a fundraiser for homeless and neglected pets in the Sioux Falls area. The race will begin at 10 a.m., and the pet contests will begin at 11 a.m. You can register for the run the day of the event starting at 8:45 a.m. or online at sfhumanesociety.com/bark.

Aug. 21: Back to School Bash at The Empire Mall

The Empire Mall is hosting a major shopping event for any kids — and parents — who are ready to get back to school. The Back to School Bash will feature many different attractions, including the mobile Great Plains Zoo, cookie-decorating stations and snacks from Boki Gelato and Hy-Vee. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. and take place in the center court of the mall near Caribou Coffee.

Aug. 22: Zumba at the Bear

Get active for a good cause this weekend with Zumba at the Bear, a fundraiser for NAMI hosted by Zumba with Mary W. The event is open to all age groups and skill levels. There’s a suggested $15 donation, which will go to NAMI’s cause of ending the stigma surrounding mental health. The class will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the lodge deck and will last 45 minutes. If you don’t want to participate but would like to support the cause, the patio will be open for “a raffle, prizes and surprises.”
