Sioux Area Metro brings back free bus rides on Fridays this summer

Ride Sioux Area Metro buses for free on Fridays, starting May 22 and continuing through Sept. 4.

Fares are free on all fixed-route buses and paratransit services every Friday.

The initiative follows the implementation of a new transit plan to bring access to 100 percent of Sioux Falls, encouraging residents and visitors to explore the revamped system while attending summer events.

“Our goal is to encourage residents to try the new transit system over the summer to reach the many vibrant events happening across the city,” said Justin Jellinek, who leads central operations for Via, the city’s transit manager. “By removing the fare on Fridays, we’re making it even easier for the community to see how efficient and accessible our redesigned network has become.”

No special ticket or app activation is needed for the free Friday trips.

Via began managing the city’s transit system in 2024. So far this year, ridership has increased almost 40 percent since that time.

“Summer is the perfect time to discover how our transit system can support your seasonal routine,” said Logan Penfield, assistant director for the city’s Planning and Development Services Department. “Whether you’re heading to a concert, a park or a local business, SAM is here to help you get there affordably.”
