Road Report: July 20, 2026

Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done 

60th Street North: 60th Street North reopened to traffic between Cliff and Bahnson avenues on the evening of July 16. The street had been closed since July 6 to allow crews to perform an asphalt mill and overlay to provide a smoother ride for motorists and extend the overall life of the street.

What’s underway

85th & I-29: Crews continue to make progress on the new interchange at 85th Street and Interstate 29.

Work is in progress on the structural support elements for the new bridges, retaining walls and ramp grading.

Water main work recently was completed along 85th west of I-29.

The overall project includes construction of a diverging diamond interchange — similar to 41st Street and I-29, and at Benson Road and I-229 — bridge structures, grading, concrete surfacing, storm drainage work, water main installation, street lighting, traffic signals, signage and pavement markings.

This project is expected to be complete in late 2027.

South Veterans Parkway: Work on South Veterans Parkway between Cliff and Sycamore avenues also is making good progress.

Sycamore Avenue reopened to traffic between 69th and 85th streets on July 2 – it is now fully paved between 69th and Veterans.

The mainline concrete paving on Veterans Parkway is complete, with crews now working on placing concrete for the medians and sidewalks.

Asphalt paving is nearing completion on Southeastern Avenue. The road is expected to reopen to traffic between 69th and 85th streets before school starts.

Paving for the path along the south side of the roadway will be occurring soon. All work on this project is expected to be complete later this fall.

Marion Road: Work is continuing on Marion Road between 259th Street/84th Street North and 258th Street/Minnehaha County Highway 130. Installation of the aggregate columns, or piers, is nearing completion.

Aggregate columns are constructed by using a large auger to remove a column of soil and replacing the soil with crushed rock that reinforces and strengthens the soil to withstand the weight of the new bridge and earthen embankment that will be constructed there.

Crews also are starting to install the steel piles that will support the new bridge over the railroad tracks.

Water main installation under the railroad tracks will begin soon. This project is expected to be complete in late 2027.

18th Street: The parking lanes along 18th Street near the intersections of First, Second, Third and Fourth avenues closed on July 15 to allow crews to perform accessible curb ramp repairs. Vehicle traffic on 18th Street will be maintained at all times. The sidewalk along 18th also will be closed during this work. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured around the work zone. This work is expected to be complete in four weeks.

12th & Highland: The intersection of 12th Street and Highland Avenue closed on July 16 to allow crews to perform storm drainage repairs. Traffic is being detoured around the work zone. This work is expected to be complete in about four weeks.

What’s next

Russell Street: Beginning today, the outside and center westbound lanes of Russell Street will be closed from Western Avenue to I-29 to allow crews to continue with concrete repairs on Russell. One lane of westbound traffic will be maintained in the inside westbound lane. Traffic control was removed last week to accommodate the large crowds expected last weekend for the air show. Work will continue on Russell until November.

12th Street: Beginning today, the outside westbound lane of 12th Street will be closed just east of Grange Avenue to allow crews to perform storm drainage repairs. Westbound traffic will be maintained in the inside westbound lane throughout the project. Eastbound traffic will not be impacted. This work is expected to be completed within four days.

Weber Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, Weber Avenue will be closed from Falls Park Drive to Third Street to allow crews to perform road maintenance work. This work is expected to be complete in two or three days.

69th Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside eastbound lane of 69th Street will be closed between Cliff Avenue and Charger Circle to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. This work is expected to be complete in one day.

Cliff Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside northbound lane of Cliff Avenue will be closed between 69th and 73rd streets to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. This work is expected to be complete in one day.

13th Street: Beginning on Tuesday, 13th Street will be closed on the east side of Cleveland Avenue to allow crews to perform accessible curb ramp repairs. After repairs are completed on the east side of Cleveland, 13th will be closed on the west side of Cleveland to allow crews to perform accessible curb ramp repairs on the other side of the street. Vehicular traffic on Cleveland will not be impacted. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured around the work zone. This work is expected to be complete in two to three weeks.

57th Street: Beginning on Wednesday, the outside eastbound lane of 57th Street will be closed between 469th/Klein and Culbert avenues to allow crews to perform utility work. This work is expected to be complete in one to two days.
