Sioux Falls Neighborhood Soccer to become YMCA program

A grassroots effort to bring free soccer and meals to Sioux Falls kids is becoming a program of the Sioux Falls Family YMCA.

Sioux Falls Neighborhood Soccer launched in 2021 and serves neighborhoods around Title I schools. Supported by local churches, schools, businesses, volunteers and community organizations, the program has grown to serve hundreds of children each season across eight neighborhood parks.

The program was created to close the opportunity gap for children who might not otherwise have access to organized sports. Participants receive free soccer balls, shin guards, uniforms, coaching and weekly meals, with the goal of creating opportunities for youth to build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.

Joining the YMCA will ensure “the long-term sustainability and growth of the community initiative while preserving the relationships and values that have made it successful,” the organizations said in a statement.

Neighborhood Soccer program director Callie Schock will join the Sioux Falls Family YMCA and continue to lead the program.

“Sioux Falls Neighborhood Soccer is honored to be joining the YMCA family, and we are excited to provide even more opportunities for the amazing kids and families we serve,” Schock said.

“Our program fits perfectly with the mission and values of the YMCA, and we look forward to continuing to grow accessible soccer in Sioux Falls. We will be better together.”

The partnership will provide Neighborhood Soccer with additional organizational support, fundraising capacity, volunteer coordination and long-term stability while maintaining its commitment to free participation and neighborhood-based programming.
