Road Report: June 1, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Louise Avenue: Work is almost complete on Louise Avenue between 49th and 53rd streets.

Most sidewalk work has been completed, and crews are working on concrete repairs in the roadway.

All work is expected to be complete within the next one to two weeks.

Minnesota Avenue: The first concrete pour for the Minnesota Avenue project happened last week on the east side of the road between Second and Fourth streets.

Traffic is expected to shift to the new concrete pavement later this week.

Crews then will remove the existing pavement on the west side of the road between Second and Fourth streets to prepare for underground utility installation in this area.

Underground utility work and drilling in preparation for additional rock blasting and rock excavation continues on the east side of the street between Fourth and Eighth streets.

All lanes are expected to be open to traffic in November.

Final landscaping and cleanup work may extend into the spring of 2027.

20th Street: Crews are making progress on the reconstruction of 20th Street through the Avera McKennan campus between Cliff and Seventh avenues.

The first phase of the project is complete, and crews have removed the old pavement in preparation for underground utility installation in the second phase.

Traffic continues to be one-way, westbound only between Cliff Avenue and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.

Construction will continue in a westerly direction throughout the 2026 construction season.

Access to the Avera McKennan emergency department entrance off of Seventh Avenue is not affected by this project; however, drivers are encouraged to use either 17th or 26th streets to access the entrance. All work is expected to be complete in November.

What’s next
Ellis Road: The daytime lane closures on Ellis Road at 46th Street originally scheduled to begin last week have been rescheduled to this week. Beginning today, there will be daytime lane closures on Ellis at 46th. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. These closures are a part of the roadway and utility improvements on 46th from Ellis to Klein Avenue. These daytime lane closures are expected to be complete in about two weeks.
12th Street: Beginning today, the inside eastbound lane, inside westbound lane and center turn lane of 12th Street will be closed at Grange Avenue to allow crews to continue work on a bridge preservation and maintenance project. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction in the outside lanes at all times. Delays are expected, so motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. 12th Street is expected to reopen to two lanes of traffic in each direction in two to three weeks.
Highway 11: Beginning today, South Dakota Highway 11 will be closed from just north of 257th Street to 258th Street near Corson to allow crews to reconstruct Highway 11. The intersection of Highway 11 and 258th Street will remain open. This closure is expected to remain in place until the summer of 2027.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning on June 8, Cliff Avenue will be fully closed to all traffic between the Spencer Park access road and the southbound Interstate 229 ramps to allow crews to install underground utilities. This full closure is expected to last for about one week. Cliff Avenue will then reopen to one lane of traffic in each direction for the remainder of the project.
