Road Report: Week of July 19

Pigeon605 Staff

July 19, 2021

Construction season is here, so we’re giving you a weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Concrete repairs started at 14th and Cliff this week; Should be fully open to traffic early next week.

Work on Cleveland Avenue from 19th to 22nd streets is complete, and concrete repairs started at Sixth and Cleveland last week should be done late this week.

Work on Rice Street at Bahnson Avenue is complete.

Private utility work started last week on westbound 49th Street between Western and Kiwanis avenues. This is expected to be complete by the middle of this week.

The Eighth Street bridge is fully open to traffic while the contractor works on final punch list items for the River Greenway and repaves the alley and trail that runs from Pioneer Park to River Road.

The bike path under the bridge on the east side of the river is open and the bike path on the west side of the river is still closed. The river is open to canoeing and kayaking.

If you read last week’s Road Report, you learned about all the slurry seal work coming. Phillips Avenue received a slurry seal Friday between 18th and 41st streets that was done in a day. 60th Street North received a slurry seal last week between Minnesota and Cliff avenues.

What’s underway

Improvements have started on Marion Road from Interstate 90 to the north. They’re needed to accommodate expected traffic increases because of development in Foundation Park, including Amazon and CJ Foods.

Improvements at the Marion Road/I-90 interchange include:

  • Traffic signals at both eastbound and westbound ramps.
  • Widened the westbound off-ramp.
  • Accessible curb ramp improvements.

The work here is mostly complete, but the city is waiting for some parts for the signals, so they won’t be turned on until later this year.

The Sioux Falls Development Foundation also is constructing the remainder of Foundation Court along the south side of the Amazon property. Work is in progress.

Improvements at Marion Road/Foundation Court (south) include:

  • Widening for a southbound left turn lane.
  • Addition of a northbound right turn lane.
  • Traffic signal.

Paving work is complete; restoration work will be happening in the next few weeks. The traffic signals won’t arrive until late summer or early fall.

Improvements on the Amazon site — paid for by Amazon — include:

  • Addition of northbound right turn lanes at both entrances off of Marion Road.
  • Traffic signal at the main entrance.

The turn lanes are complete. Amazon is waiting for the traffic signals to arrive.

The city is working on the design for paving Marion Road from Foundation Court up to Minnehaha County Highway 130 — the Crooks/Renner road. This work will take place in multiple phases over multiple years and include underground utilities, grading, paving and potentially an overpass over the railroad tracks. The first phase is expected to begin in 2022.

What’s next

Accessible curb ramp work will begin on 10th Street between Dakota and Minnesota avenues today. The right turn lane onto Minnesota Avenue will be closed. Other periodic lane closures may occur. The work should be down in about two weeks.

Lane closures will begin on 26th Street between Marion Road and Shirley Avenue today. The city will be performing concrete repairs in this area in conjunction with the state work already happening at the 26th Street/I-29 interchange. The work is expected to be complete in mid-October.
