Road Report: March 24, 2025
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Sixth Street: Sixth Street from Foss Avenue to Veterans Parkway opened after its closure last fall. The section has one lane of traffic in each direction to allow crews to complete the remaining work.

Remaining tasks include median concrete installation, sidewalk construction, street lighting, traffic signals and restoration work.

The east shoulder along Veterans Parkway at Sixth Street is closed to start pavement removal and utility work.

Veterans Parkway: Lane closures on Veterans Parkway between Arrowhead Parkway and Rice Street started March 12 to allow crews to install silt fence along the east side of Veterans. During this time, pipe materials also will be delivered. This work is part of the Pump Station 240 project. Northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane during operations. This work is expected to be completed within two weeks.
Veterans Parkway: The northbound shoulder of Veterans Parkway closed March 12 between Split Rock Road and Arrowhead Parkway to allow crews to remove the bike trail along the east side of Veterans in preparation for sanitary sewer work. As part of this work, the northbound right-turn lane at Split Rock also will be closed. Northbound right turns will be allowed from the outside northbound through lane. Two lanes of northbound traffic will be maintained during this work, which is expected to be completed in three weeks.
57th & Six Mile: The intersection of 57th Street and Six Mile Road closed March 19 to allow crews to perform sanitary sewer construction. This work is anticipated to be completed in approximately one week.
26th Street: The parking lane on the north side of 26th Street between Holly and Garfield avenue, as well as the sidewalk, closed March 19. Westbound traffic will be diverted in the area. This work is anticipated to be completed in approximately one month.
What’s next
Arrowhead & Veterans: Construction of a new intersection at Arrowhead and Veterans parkways begins Wednesday. Arrowhead, which carries traffic east and west, will be closed east of the intersection. Veterans, which carries traffic north and south, will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction through the intersection. Arrowhead will be closed from just east of Veterans to 10th Street. Arrowhead will remain open west of Veterans. Additionally, Hein Avenue will be closed from Arrowhead to the road’s dead end to the north. This closure for Arrowhead and lane reduction for Veterans will be in place through the first phase of construction, which is anticipated to continue through the rest of the year.

The construction project is anticipated to take two years. Improvements will include underground utility installation, grading, retaining walls, three pedestrian underpasses, concrete surfacing, signing, street lighting, traffic signals and a landscaped median. The project budget is $29.3 million. Currently, Veterans and Arrowhead parkways have 16,000 and 17,000 vehicles daily, respectively, that travel through the intersection. Once complete, the intersection will be one of the largest in Sioux Falls. Here’s a look at the detour map:

South Veterans Parkway: Construction of South Veterans Parkway is starting Wednesday, beginning with the closure of Southeastern Avenue from Bison Trail to 85th Street. South Veterans Parkway is a joint project between the city and the South Dakota Department of Transportation. The first phase will start with the contractor installing utilities along Southeastern as well as hauling dirt and other materials for the roadbed across Southeastern at the Veterans Parkway intersection, which will be south of Bison along Southeastern. A signed detour route will use 85th, Sycamore Avenue and 69th Street for northbound traffic and 69th, Cliff Avenue and 85th for southbound traffic. Access will be open on Bison and maintained for local traffic along Southeastern. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes. Santa Rosa Court: Beginning today, the east loop of South Santa Rosa Court will be closed. Access to businesses will be maintained via the west leg of Santa Rosa. The contractor will be working on sanitary sewer. The work is expected to be completed in one week.
Bike trail: Beginning Tuesday, a section of the bike trail at Tuthill Park near the Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange, will be closed on the north side for Xcel Energy’s transmission line improvements.

Trail users can still access the trail from Pasley Park, but passage near Cliff Avenue will not be permitted. A signed detour will be in place between Pasley and Tuthill parks.
