Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Sixth Street: Sixth Street between the Big Sioux River bridge downtown and Weber Avenue fully opened to traffic at the end of August!

Work on this project included removal and replacement of the bridge deck and girders, underground utility improvements, railroad crossing improvements, greenway trail improvements, new concrete street and sidewalk surfacing, street lighting, back-in parking and streetscape construction.

Here’s a closer look at the finished project!

What’s underway

Cliff & I-229: The outside northbound lane of Cliff Avenue closed at Interstate 229 on Aug. 29 to allow crews to install a retaining wall for a temporary bridge that will be used during the reconstruction of this interchange in 2025. Significant traffic delays are expected during this lane closure, especially during the morning. Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Highway 11: Traffic on Highway 11 in Brandon was switched to the two southbound lanes between Interstate 90 and Redwood Boulevard on Aug. 30. Access to businesses on the east side of Highway 11, also known as Splitrock Boulevard in town, will be maintained during construction. This traffic diversion will be in place for approximately three weeks until grading and paving work in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 is completed.

10th Street: Work on 10th Street between Interstate 229 and Sycamore Avenue is progressing well.

The outside westbound lane was paved late last week, and work will move into the next phase of construction this week.

Beginning today, the northbound and southbound left turn lanes on Cleveland Avenue will be closed at 10th Street to allow crews to work on traffic signal improvements. No left turns will be allowed from Cleveland onto 10th.

Also beginning today, traffic for both eastbound and westbound 10th Street will be reduced to one lane on the new asphalt pavement, and the middle three lanes will be closed between I-229 and Sycamore to allow crews to perform concrete repairs and overlay the road.

Significant traffic delays are expected during this phase of construction.

Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes. Work is expected to be complete in mid-to-late September.

What’s next

I-29 & 12th: Beginning today, overnight lane closures will be in place at the Interstate 29 and 12th Street interchange. The overnight lane closures will run from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for crews to complete pre-inspection work for a bridge girder repair project. Lane and ramp closures will be in place in various locations as crews complete their work. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

Cliff and I-229: Beginning today, the northbound on-ramp from Cliff Avenue to Interstate 229 will be closed to allow crews to install a retaining wall for a temporary bridge and constructing widened lanes that will be used during the reconstruction of this interchange in 2025. This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.

18th Street: Beginning today, 18th Street will be closed between Dakota and Center avenues to allow crews to replace rooftop units on an adjacent building. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
