Road Report: Oct. 28, 2024
Construction season is winding down. Here’s our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next as long as the weather holds.
What’s done
Tallgrass Avenue: Work on Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 85th streets is complete and open to traffic.

The project included the construction of concrete pavement, asphalt pavement, curbs and gutters, a concrete median, sidewalks, lighting and landscaping.




85th & Sundowner: The intersection of 85th Street and Sundowner Avenue is complete and open.

Work on the gravel surfacing continues on 85th Street west of Sundowner.

All work on this project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025.

This project includes work on 85th Street, which involves the installation of a storm sewer, water main, concrete paving, asphalt paving and a roundabout at Heritage Parkway.
Tenth Street: Tenth Street from West to Menlo avenues is open to traffic. This segment is part of the 10th Street/Pettigrew Neighborhood street and utility improvement project. The project is scheduled to be completed later this fall. Work consists of the complete reconstruction of 10th Street from West to Menlo avenues, Covell Avenue from 10th to 11th streets, and Menlo Avenue from Ninth to 10th streets. Work includes replacement of water main, upgrading of sanitary sewer, asphalt pavement, concrete curb, street lighting, traffic striping and ADA sidewalk ramps.
What’s underway
Benson & I-229: Work continues at the Benson Road/Interstate 229 interchange, which is nearing completion!

Work on the interchange island, landscaping and final dirt work around the ramps is underway.

All ramps are open, and the interchange is operating as a single-lane diverging diamond configuration.

All lanes are expected to be open by mid-November and will feature the city’s first triple left-turn lane from northbound I-229 onto westbound Benson Road.

On Friday morning, a ribbon-cutting event with federal, state and local leaders was held to celebrate the opening of the second diverging diamond interchange in Sioux Falls.

Benson Road: Work continues on the Benson Road bridge just east of Minnesota Avenue.

Crews are replacing the concrete approach slabs at both ends of the bridge.

Removal of the barrier curb and falsework is nearly complete, and the bike path paving underneath the bridge is finished.

Installation of conduit and streetlights on the bridge is underway.

The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic in late November or early December, although all work will not be completed until next spring.
12th Street: 12th Street closed between First and Second avenue on Oct. 21 to allow crews to perform road work. This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.
67th & Coneflower: The intersection of 67th Street and Coneflower Avenue closed Oct. 23 to allow crews to install new utilities. This work is anticipated to be completed in approximately two weeks.
Career Avenue: Career Avenue closed between Benson Road and 54th Street North on Oct. 23 to allow crews to install new utilities. This work is anticipated to be completed in approximately one week.
Grange Avenue: Grange Avenue closed between 10th and 11th streets on Oct. 23 to allow crews to work on new utilities. The work is expected to be complete in one week.
12th Street: The outside westbound lane on 12th Street closed between La Mesa Drive and Sertoma Avenue on Oct. 23 to allow MidAmerican Energy to work in the area. The work is expected to be complete in a week.
What’s next
I-229 & 10th: Beginning at 9 a.m. today a closure is scheduled for the Interstate 229 southbound off-ramp at 10th Street. This closure for pavement repair operations will be in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday. During the closure, I-229 southbound traffic is encouraged to use the Rice Street or 26th Street exits.
Minnesota Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Minnesota Avenue will be closed at Benson Road to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. This work is anticipated to be completed in approximately one week.
14th Street: Beginning today, the outside eastbound lane of 14th Street will be closed between First and Second avenues to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed within one day.
Louise Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane on Louise Avenue will be closed between 85th and 90th streets to allow Xcel Energy to work in the area. The work is expected to be completed in two weeks.
River Road: Beginning Tuesday, the outside eastbound lane of River Road will be closed between Phillips Avenue and 10th Street to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed within two days.
