Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

41st Street: The sidewalk work on the north side westbound lanes of 41st Street between Western and Westport avenues is complete and all lanes are open to traffic! However…

What’s underway

41st Street: The outside eastbound lane of 41st Street closed between Westport and Kiwanis avenues May 21 to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements. Two lanes of eastbound traffic will be maintained between Westport and Kiwanis. This lane closure will be extended east through Sheldon Lane on Wednesday. One lane of eastbound traffic will be maintained between Kiwanis and Sheldon.

This is the next phase of a project to perform sidewalk improvements on both sides of 41st Street from Westport to Western avenues and on Minnesota Avenue from 11th to 18th streets. The entire project is anticipated to be completed in August.

11th Street: The eastbound left lane of 11th Street closed between Dakota and Main avenues May 22 to allow crews to perform repairs on an adjacent building. This work is expected to be complete in early August.

I-29: The South Dakota Department of Transportation is working on rehabilitating several bridges on Interstate 29 between Madison and 26th streets.

Work includes bridge deck overlays, approach slab repair/replacement and guardrail improvements.

Work on the east half of the bridges is expected to be complete around mid-June, then work will switch to the west half of the bridges.

The northbound on-ramp from 26th Street onto I-29 is expected to remain closed until mid-June. The overall project is expected to be complete in August.

I-229 & Cliff: Work continues at the Interstate 229/Cliff Avenue interchange reconstruction project.

Crews have removed the pavement on I-229 and 41st Street and are starting to remove the pavement on Cliff.

Underground utility work is mostly complete on 41st and will be starting soon on Cliff.

Crews also are installing sheet pile in support of reconstructing the southbound I-229 bridge and are working on one of the pedestrian underpasses.

Beginning on Tuesday, Cliff Avenue will be fully closed to all traffic from just north of the northbound I-229 on- and off-ramps to 38th Street to allow crews to reconstruct this segment of Cliff. Motorists will be detoured to Minnesota Avenue via 33rd and 57th streets during this closure.

Cliff Avenue is expected to reopen to one lane of traffic in each direction in mid-August.  The overall interchange reconstruction project will be complete in late 2026.

What’s next

Tomar Park: Beginning Tuesday, the west entrance and west parking lot of Tomar Park will be closed to allow crews to complete parking lot improvements. The east entrance and east parking lot will remain open. This is the first of two phases of parking lot improvement work at Tomar Park. This phase is expected to be completed by mid-July, with the entire project anticipated to be completed in mid-August.

33rd Street: Beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, 33rd Street will be closed between Prairie and Summit avenues to allow crews to perform utility work. Traffic will be detoured to 26th Street via Grange and Summit avenues. There also will be intermittent construction traffic flagging during the day on 33rd Street near West Avenue and near Summit Avenue through Friday. This work is expected to be complete by the end of May.

26th Street: Beginning Wednesday, the outside eastbound lane on 26th Street will be closed between Red Oak Drive and Highline Avenue to allow crews to perform sidewalk work. This work is part of a project to construct a shared-use path to connect Rosa Parks Elementary to the east side of Veterans Parkway. This work is expected to be completed in about two weeks. The overall shared-use path project will be fully completed later this summer.
