Road Report: Aug. 5, 2024
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Tallgrass Avenue: Concrete paving took place last week in the future southbound lanes on Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 85th streets.

Crews will turn around and pave the future northbound lanes later this week or early next week, weather permitting.

This project consists of widening Tallgrass Avenue to four lanes with a center median, turn lanes at the major intersections, sidewalks and street lighting.

Underground utilities also were installed. All work is expected to be complete later this fall.

10th Street: The outside eastbound lanes on 10th Street between Interstate 229 and Sycamore Avenue were paved last week. Work will shift this week to the outside westbound lane on Wednesday.

Beginning on Wednesday, the outside westbound lane of 10th Street will be closed between Sycamore and I-229 to allow crews to perform underground utility work, concrete repairs, concrete milling and asphalt paving. Eastbound traffic will be returned to two lanes, but the lanes will be uneven temporarily while work is occurring in the outside westbound lane.

After the outside westbound lane is paved, the three middle lanes will be paved. All work is expected to be complete later this fall.

Russell Street: The inside eastbound and inside westbound lanes of the Russell Street bridges over the Big Sioux River west of Kiwanis Avenue closed July 31 to allow crews to perform bridge maintenance work. Traffic will be maintained in the two outside lanes in both directions. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures on the bridges will vary. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open. This work is expected to be complete in October.
Fourth Avenue: The southbound lanes on Fourth Avenue closed between Amidon and Maple streets Aug. 1 to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the northbound lanes. Beginning Tuesday, work will shift to the northbound lanes with one lane of traffic in each direction being maintained in the southbound lanes. All work is expected to be complete in one to two weeks.
What’s next
12th Street/Highway 42: Beginning today, lane closures are planned for 12th Street/Highway 42 from Ellis Road to 3 miles west at 466th Avenue. The project includes grinding, joint and spall repair, and pavement repair for damaged sections of the highway. The work includes removing damaged concrete, placing new concrete and rebar, and crack sealing. During the project, asphalt shoulders also will be inspected and replaced as needed. Flaggers will be stationed on each end of closed segments during working hours, and automated signals will be used during evening and overnight hours. Motorists should be prepared for delays. Drivers are asked to be aware of construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lanes and to slow down through the work zone. Motorists should expect congestion, very slow speeds or stopped traffic conditions during peak driving times. This work is expected to be complete in about seven weeks.
Dakota Avenue: Beginning today, Dakota Avenue will be closed between Sixth Street and Main Avenue to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
57th Street: Beginning today, the eastbound lanes on 57th Street will be closed east of Sweetbriar Drive to allow crews to replace rooftop units on an adjacent building. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the westbound lanes. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.
Louise Avenue: Beginning tonight, Xcel Energy will be closing the southbound left turn lane on Louise Avenue just north of 85th Street for utility potholing. This work will be done overnight, starting at 8 p.m. and finishing before the morning commute. Potholing will continue Tuesday evening when Xcel will close the outside northbound lane on Louise just north of 85th. This work will be done overnight, starting at 8 p.m. and finishing before the morning commute.
