Road Report: July 3, 2023
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
33rd & Western: The intersection of 33rd Street and Western Avenue reopened late Friday afternoon after crews completed sewer and storm drainage system repairs.
What’s underway
41st & I-29: As work continues to rebuild the Interstate 29 interchange at 41st Street, beginning Thursday, traffic on 41st between I-29 and Shirley Avenue will be switched over from the south side of the street to the new concrete pavement on the north side of the street. There will continue to be one lane of traffic in each direction with a center turn lane as work progresses to the next phase. All work is expected to be complete in the spring of 2024.
East-side traffic signals: Work is in progress to install new traffic signals at 33rd Street and Veterans Parkway, and at 41st Street and Linedrive Avenue.
Crews are working on constructing the traffic signal pole foundations and replacing the sidewalk, curb and gutter, and concrete pavement that needed to be removed to install the signals.
Both traffic signals should be up and running by the end of the summer.
41st Street: Work should be complete in three to four weeks on the ADA accessibility improvements project on 41st Street between Western and Minnesota avenues.
Crews currently are replacing sidewalk on the south side of the street between Grange and Minnesota avenue.
Arrowhead Parkway: Construction on Arrowhead Parkway near Six Mile Road is nearing completion.
Crews are working on the median, finishing up the sidewalk and installing topsoil and landscaping.
Work is still on track for substantial completion in mid-August.
Benson & I-229: Work continues to make progress at the Benson Road and Interstate 229 interchange.
Grading, gravel and concrete work is underway east of I-229.
Underground utilities are being installed west of I-229.
Crews also are working on widening the bridge over the interstate. This project won’t be complete until the spring of 2025.
What’s next
Marion Road: Beginning Wednesday, North Marion Road, which turns into 471st Avenue outside of city limits, will be closed from County Highway 130, also known as 258th Street, south for a half-mile to allow crews to reconstruct and widen Marion. Improvements will include new water main, a storm drainage system, street lighting and concrete paving. Drivers should use Interstate 29 or 470th Avenue as alternate routes. This work is expected to be complete in late October.
I-229: Beginning Thursday, I-229 will be closed in both directions between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Benson Road to Interstate 90 to allow crews to remove the temporary forms used to pour the new bridge deck for the 60th Street North bridge over I-229. A detour route will be in place. This work is expected to be complete by 6 a.m. Friday.
Holbrook Avenue: Beginning Thursday, Holbrook Avenue will be closed from 41st to 57th streets to allow crews to apply slurry seal to the street. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.
