Decades after life-changing help, she’s helping pay it forward
This paid piece is sponsored by LSS.
When Vicki Breeman arrived at LSS 32 years ago, she felt like her life was spiraling.
“My life was crumbling all around me,” she said. “Everything was falling apart — and quickly.”
At the time, Breeman was battling mental health struggles, addiction, legal issues and financial strain. A single mother to three children, she knew something had to change. “I looked at my kids and realized that I’ve got a life to live, and I’m responsible for them. I needed help.”
Breeman received counseling through LSS, which she said was pivotal.
“I landed in the right place. LSS changed my life in unexpected ways.”
During a counseling session, Breeman’s therapist explained that a couple had heard her story and felt compelled to offer their support. The couple donated $600 to help Breeman get back on track, and decades later, she has never forgotten their kindness.
“I still remember the day. My feelings of self-worth were about as low as they could be. Why would they do that? Why would they help me? I am just so grateful that they did.”

The couple’s support allowed Breeman to pay off some important bills and even get her children a few presents before Christmas. She continued therapy, moved past her alcohol addiction, worked through her legal issues and got back on course with her finances.
“It changed my life. Everything was different after that.”
Today, Breeman is 32 years sober and has returned to LSS, this time to make a donation in honor of the donors who changed everything for her family.
“I realize how blessed we are, and we are incredibly grateful for everything over the years,” Breeman said. “It’s always on my mind. I guess when I look back, I regret that I waited so long. What they did for me changed my life, and that’s why I’m here today.”
Every year, LSS celebrates stories like Breeman’s during South Dakota CARES — a statewide day of giving to generate support for children, families and communities in South Dakota. Breeman shares her story and a donation in hopes of helping someone in a similar circumstance as she was.
While she may never know the details, Breeman now understands why someone chose to support her all those years ago. “I hope to help someone financially and show that there’s hope to heal, to be well and to be successful.”
Breeman’s story started in a therapy session at LSS more than three decades ago. Today, you can help honor Breeman and her family’s journey to a happier, healthier life. Now, during South Dakota CARES, LSS’ annual day of giving fundraising drive, your donation is matched!
