Chefs will battle to support lifesaving work in first Face It in the Fire competition
This paid event listing is sponsored by Face It TOGETHER.
Two Sioux Falls chefs will test their skills at a first-of-its-kind fundraiser this month.
Face It in the Fire will benefit Face It TOGETHER, an addiction wellness nonprofit that provides peer coaching for those impacted by addiction, including loved ones.
“We wanted to do something special for our 15th anniversary as a nonprofit,” said Ally Krupinsky, director of communications.
As they were brainstorming, Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen owner and Face It in the Fire event chair Inkka Beaudion proposed a vision “for a fun, unique chef event,” she said.
“It felt like a great opportunity to bring the community together, celebrate our 15 years of work and raise awareness of the prevalence of addiction in the culinary and service industry,” Krupinsky said.
T.R. Fuentes-Mckenzie, executive chef of Morrie’s Steakhouse, will take on Ryan Tracy, chef and owner of Dakota Craft Links, at the event Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Washington Pavilion.

The event will feature a live, ingredient-specific battle between the chefs on the main stage that will culminate in the winner being chosen by a panel of expert judges. While the battle rages, guests will enjoy tasting portions from local restaurants, featuring appetizers, desserts and mocktails with the ability to vote on the People’s Choice award for the night and the Best Decor tablescape.
“There are many talented local chefs here in town. We intentionally sought out individuals who have a strong craft and a heart for our community and its growth and development,” Beaudion said.
“When we reached out to Ryan and T.R., both of them were all-in. They’re getting to do what they love best, creating a unique dish for people to enjoy, while supporting our work and showing their skills.”
In addition, nine amazing floor chefs will be preparing appetizers, desserts and mocktails for Face It in the Fire:
- Nefu Mageo, 605 Island Guy.
- Omar Thornton, Cooks & Bakers Kitchen.
- Marcela Salas, BibiSol.
- Tanner Mott, Safari Bar & Grill.
- Kenny Wottie, Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen.
- Jessica Blodgett, Umami Cafe & Catering.
- Josie Layton, Intoxibakes.
- Michael Mohr, Carpenter Bar.
- Jeff Umberger, Crave American Kitchen & Sushi Bar.
“The uniqueness of Face It in the Fire mirrors the uniqueness of Face It TOGETHER’s approach to addiction,” Krupinsky said.
“We’re thrilled to bring an event like this to Sioux Falls as we reflect on the last 15 years of sharing addiction wellness.”
Tickets to the event are limited, so reserve yours here soon.
Funds raised will support the organization’s lifesaving work, “particularly so we can continue offering services at no cost to those who can’t afford care,” Krupinsky said.
“Our approach is compassionate, data-driven and personalized to each person’s wellness goals. For every $1 invested in our coaching of those with addiction, there’s a $12.40 social return on investment to the community.”
