Nov. 21: CHS history

For 131 years, Children’s Home Society has helped children and families in Sioux Falls and the area. Learn about its history in a lecture hosted by the Minnehaha County Historical Society. Rick Weber, CHS development director, will share its story at 7 p.m. Thursday at Children’s Home Society, 801 N. Sycamore Ave. A social will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Nov. 21: Jazz notes

Trio Jazz Club, 340 S. Main Ave., will host a high-energy performance by saxophonist Brian Hanegan and his hand-picked band on Thursday. It will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Hanegan is an internationally touring saxophonist, composer and bandleader from Sioux Falls. As an associate professor and director of jazz Sstudies at the Augustana University School of Music, he directs the Northlanders Jazz Ensemble, Blues & Gold Jazz Combo and teaches studio saxophone, jazz improvisation and the history of jazz, blues and rock.

Nov. 21: Psychic medium

Spend an enchanted evening with psychic medium Julie McGraw at Glacial Lakes Distillery & Brewhouse, 200 S. Main Ave. McGraw will reveal the secrets of the tarot cards from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Nov. 22: Holiday kickoff

Want a magical start to the holiday season? Come to the Falls Overlook Cafe, and embrace the winter chills with festivity as the Winter Wonderland festivities begin. Cafe operator Stensland Family Farms will offer free ice cream, while supplies last, and it will serve hot chocolate and offer soup flights. The free Winter Wonderland at Falls Park will light up for the first time Friday and continue through Jan. 5. Expect to see more than 335,000 total LEDs and lights, more than 250 decorated trees, decorated light poles and over a mile of garland. The falls light up at 5 p.m., with fireworks at 6 p.m.

Nov. 23: Turkey Trail 5K

Burn up your pre-Thanksgiving calories with an adventurous Turkey Trail Run 5K hosted by Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation. Run or walk through the wooded trails of Pasley Park. A small rubber turkey will be hidden along the trail. If you spot it, you will entered in a raffle to win a free turkey for your holiday meal. Sign-in begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with the race at 1 p.m. Cost is $10. Registration is required here.

Nov. 25: Friendsgiving pizza

Severance Brewing Co. will host a Friendsgiving Free Pizza Night from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at 701 N. Phillips Ave. Severance will provide 25 large pizzas — Bangers & Mash with Turkey and Cheese/Pepperoni — from Sunny’s Pizzeria. It’s first come, first served, so bring your friends for drinks, fellowship and a chance to kick back before the holiday hustle and bustle set in.
