March 2: Sustainability sessions

Families are welcome to attend the sustainability series presented by Siouxland Libraries in partnership with Dakota Rural Action. The sessions run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at the downtown library. Thursday’s topic is seed swapping and saving. Upcoming programs are soap making and foraging and garden teas, April 6; a soil improvement presentation, May 4; cooking locally, June 1; Fermentation 101, July 6; and backyard chickens, Aug. 3.

March 3: Artist receptions

New work from Sioux Falls photographer and artist Mercedes Nelson will be on display at the Washington Pavilion’s Schultz Gallery through June. A reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. In her artist statement, Nelson said she has been studying electrical towers and poles and documenting them with a Polaroid camera.

New artists will be featured on First Friday at Rehfeld’s Art & Framing, 431 N. Phillips Ave. Works by photographer Tom Dempster, encaustic artist Jenny Bye and Nancy Everist, who scuplts with semiprecious stones, will be on display. A reception runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

At EastBank Art Gallery, 401 E. Eighth St., guest artist Judy DeBoer will show work from her collection, “Think Spring — Flower Power,” and member artist John V. Nelson also is featured through April 1. The First Friday reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

March 4: Ag Day at the Pavilion

The Washington Pavilion’s Ag Day will show appreciation to the Midwest’s farmers and ranchers and help children and families learn about agriculture’s significance. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It will include lunch for the first 750 people. Exhibits will include pet goats, rabbits, piglets, hatching chicks, shelling corn, collecting beetles, planting flower seeds and learning to crochet and knit.

March 4: Eagle hike

This time of year, eagles are common at Good Earth State Park.  This one-mile hike will go on the search for them, while participants will learn facts about eagles.  The hike will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Please dress for the weather with warm layers and good walking shoes. A state park license is required.

March 4: Pinball tournament

Pinball wizards unite! A three-strike knockout tournament, IFPA sanctioned, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Pinball Room, 2111 S. Minnesota Ave. Arrive early for registration. There’s a $5 buy-in with 100 percent payout. Groups of four will play on a randomly selected game each round.

March 5: Yoga and dogs

Want to see a real downward dog? Tenacious Dog Training, Wildflower Yoga and Severance Brewery are teaming up for a yoga session at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Lindsay Perous, a certified yoga instructor and Severance sales manager, will lead the yoga while Maggie Pearson of Tenacious Dog Training will guide your dog’s obedience training. Cost is $25 with $5 donated to Almost Home Canine Rescue. Space is limited.
