The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.

May 6: Date Hike

Get outside with a date Friday with Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation. The Date Hike will take place at Leaders Park from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., where you’ll get a chance to work with an outdoor recreation specialist to stake out some of the plants and animals around the area. You’ll also learn about the history of the park. Registration is required for this age 18-plus event, but the hike in the park at Sixth Street and I-229 is free. You can register here.

May 6: May Art & Wine Walk

The May Art & Wine Walk is taking place Friday, and it is bound to be a great opening to the summer season. For $25, you can buy a Wine Sampling Punch Card and walk downtown while admiring the work of local artists. If you choose not to have any wine, the art is free to view, and you also can purchase wine by the glass. The event will start at 5 p.m., with 31 artists displaying their work and punch cards available for purchase at 11th and Phillips. Check out all the offerings here.

May 6: Poetry and Piano with Rattlesnake and friends

The Full Circle Book Co-Op is hosting poet and musician Christopher Vondracek for an evening of poetry and piano. Vondracek will play his original music and read poetry, and poets Patrick Hicks, Marcella Remund and Angelica Mercado-Ford will join to read some of their original pieces. The event starts at 6 p.m. Friday at 123 W. 10th St.

May 7: Hello May Market

Here’s a good way to get some Mother’s Day shopping in this weekend: the Hello May Market will be Saturday. The market is a pop-up shop taking residence in Convolo at 201 N. Weber Ave. and will feature five locally owned businesses: Alissa’s Flower Farm, The Daily Collective, Tint + Clay, Blush Bakery by Kate and Wonderfully Made Co. The market is from 4 to 7 p.m.

May 10: Traveling Storytime

Head to McKennan Park on Saturday for Traveling Storytime, an hourlong interactive event where children will be able to “explore our community with stories, movement and music.” This week, there will be songs and a story read by Siouxland Libraries staff. Traveling Storytime is recommended for children age 2 to 5 and will begin at 10 a.m. No registration is required for the free event.
