March 13: Plant pop-up

Sarah Woods focuses on gardening and propagation/seed saving. She currently has more than she can use, so Woods is hosting a plant pop-up from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Second Helpings, 2133 S. Minnesota Ave. Offerings will include pink sunflowers and other flowers, basil, succulents, oyster plants and blue, white and regular pumpkins. Nothing costs more than $5, and Woods is putting the proceeds toward her college tuition.

March 14: Coyote Saturday

The Game, Fish & Parks’ Outdoor Campus is offering a Spring Saturday activity that focuses on the coyote. From 1 to 3 p.m., you can pick up a “Coyote Coexistence Passport” and explore hands-on stations to learn about coyote tracks, habitat, behavior, myths vs. facts and tips for safely sharing space with wildlife. Visitors who complete the stations earn stamps and small wildlife-themed prizes.

March 14: Puzzle competition

Feeling puzzled? The doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for a puzzle competition at First United Methodist Church, 401 S. Spring Ave., that includes mini games, a cooperative 1,000-piece “Magic Puzzle,” a free puzzle swap and a baked goods sale. The race will begin at 2 p.m.; teams will work the same 500-piece Ravensburger puzzle. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. You can register here.

March 14: St. Pat’s on Saturday

The 46th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, presented by Central Bank, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. The painting of the shamrock takes place at 11 a.m. in front of The First National Bank, Ninth and Phillips.

Fingers crossed for good weather, and we’ll see you on Phillips Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls. This year’s marshal is Kelly Grogan, a longtime firefighter with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue who retired in 2014.

Here are some other Saturday events:

  • The El Riad Fife & Drum Corps is hosting the 15th annual Shamrock Shootout, the biggest beer pong tournament in the Midwest. Up to 200 teams will compete for cash prizes, and three games are guaranteed. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. at 510 S. Phillips Ave.
  • The celebration in The Steel District will run from 3 to 11 p.m. with games, activities and space heaters in the alley. Shamrock glasses will be given away while supplies last, and a live DJ will perform from 3 to 7 p.m.
  • The St. Patrick’s Day party at Club David will begin at 1 p.m. in the upper level and at 3 p.m. on the main level. The music will begin at 5 p.m. with the Donnybrook Brawlers, Moxton Road, O.L.I. and Chris Hartman. There’s no cover charge.
  • Blarney Stone Pub, 333 S. Phillips Ave., will open at 7 a.m. and offer brunch until 11 a.m. All brunch items will include a green beer. There also will be Irish music, authentic Irish food, trinket giveaways and drink specials. Oh, the party will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday, the actual St. Patrick’s Day, again with brunch until 11 a.m.
  • McNally’s Irish Pub, 6211 S. Old Village Place, will begin its St. Patrick’s celebration at 8 a.m. Saturday with breakfast until noon. You can hear bagpipes at noon and 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday, McNally’s will open at 8 a.m., serving breakfast until noon. The bagpipers will be back at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
  • Both locations of Shenanigans Sports Bar & Grill will celebrate from morning to evening with live music and DJs. A shuttle bus will run between the two locations from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The westside location will have live music starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

March 14: Modern coffeehouse

Flynn, Koliner & Rieck will offer a modern nod to the 1960s coffeehouse stage featuring guitar- and mandolin-led sets in the lower-level “coffeehouse” of Myrtle’s Fur Vault & Bar, 208 S. Main Ave. The evening will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. There’s a $7 cover charge.

March 16: Irish performers

Téada, one of Ireland’s leading traditional music groups, will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at the Old Courthouse Museum.  Renowned for their driving tunes, expressive melodies and world-class musicianship, Téada bring nearly 25 years of international touring experience to this special evening concert.
