The week ahead: July 3-9
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
July 2-3, 5-6, 10-13: Hamlet
Bare Bodkins Theatre Company will perform the Shakespeare classic “Hamlet” on eight nights at the Queen Bee Mill on the east side of Falls Park. The 90-minute performance is free, but seating is limited, so come to the mill’s gate starting 30 minutes ahead of the 7 p.m. start time. Lawn chairs or blankets are recommended.

July 3: ADA display
The art exhibit “Refocus” will open Thursday in the Shriver Square Atrium. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except Sundays through July. The exhibit in honor of Disability Empowerment Month is a partnership with Serendipity Studio Gallery and Gifts brought together through Rare by Design and Untitled.10 with photography by artist Hollie Leggett. It features local individuals with visible disabilities.

July 3-4: Independence Day
We’ve already shared the special Open Streets activities taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, but here are more Fourth of July events both traditional and unusual:
- While Sioux Falls has canceled its Fourth of July parade, plenty of other events are scheduled for Friday. The day includes a Municipal Band concert, field events, handprint flags and patriotic crafts. You can find all the details here.

-
- Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation will host an Independence Day Patriotic Bike Parade on Thursday around the Jacobson Plaza Ribbon at 810 N. Phillips Ave. The parade is filled up, but it still will be fun to watch. Decorating begins at 5:30 p.m., with the parade to follow. Everything will be wrapped up by 7:30 p.m.
- The Lennox Fourth of July Parade will start about 10:30 a.m. Friday offering floats, tractors, cars, horses, music from the town’s municipal band and candy for the kids. The parade route runs from the sports complex to Main Street, north on Main to First Avenue, west to Elm Street, south on Elm and ending at the Second Reformed Church. Bring your lawn chairs.

- It’s a Fourth of July Grill-Out, hosted by American Legion Post 45, starting at 4 p.m. Friday at 100 S. Columbia St., Harrisburg. On the menu: burgers, brats and fireworks.
- It’s Free First Friday at the Washington Pavilion from 5 to 8 p.m. Explore the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center with more than 100 exhibits and eight art galleries. Admission is first come, first served. Check in at the box office when you arrive to gain admission. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
- What better time to sing out than the Fourth of July? Good NAtured, 921 E. Eighth St., will host Karafun Karaoke at 7 p.m. Friday.
- The Brass Holes will offer a star-spangled evening of brass-powered music at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. The Fourth of July Fireworks Show will include two hours of music, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Then, it’s time for fireworks!
- The Big Sioux Recreation Area also will host a Fourth of July Bike Parade at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Go to the comfort station to decorate your bike with glow sticks and streamers for a parade through the campground, 410 W. Park St., Brandon.
- The Main Street Humboldt Bar will host what it promises to be a breathtaking fireworks display at 10 p.m. Friday. It will take place at the Humboldt baseball fields. Bring blankets or lawn chairs.
July 6: Summer concert
Musician Janice Gilbert, a country/folk singer who performs original tunes and covers, will be on stage from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Good Earth State Park at Blood Run. Seating is provided, but you can bring your own chair. A food truck will be on the grounds. You do need a valid South Dakota park pass for entrance.

July 7: Book club anniversary
If you’ve been intending to check out the Silent Book Club, what better time than its first anniversary? Founder Robin Nipp said there may be treats and a raffle. On Monday, bring the book you’re reading to Altered Species Ales on the south side of the Western Mall. From 6 to 6:30 p.m., you’ll arrive, order drinks and food, and share what you’re reading. After an hour of reading, you have from 7:30 to 8 p.m. to socialize if you’d like.
