Jan. 7: First Friday

The first First Friday of the year is this week. While there may not be the block parties reminiscent of summer First Fridays, there are still deals and sales to enjoy downtown. Enjoy free admission to the Washington Pavilion’s Kirby Science Discovery Center and discounted CineDome tickets. Also, check out the award-winning Downtown Burger Battle. With 27 restaurants participating, there is sure to be a burger for every taste bud.

Jan. 7: Bird Dog Bingo

Severance Brewing Co. is hosting a special edition of its Beer & Bingo event. Bird Dog Bingo will operate the same as normal bingo nights but will support the new women’s chapter of South Dakota Pheasants Forever. The Women on the Wing chapter supports “habitat, outreach/education and advocacy” for the state and its pheasant population. Bingo will begin at 7 p.m. Friday.

Jan. 7-9: Frosty Frolics

Spend the weekend participating in fun outdoor activities with Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation. Frosty Frolics weekend will consist of a very full schedule — 10K and 5K fun runs, human foosball and ice fishing are all on the docket.

There’s also free skate rental Friday through Sunday on all six outdoor ice rinks, which are frozen and ready for skaters.

Jan. 8: Lazer Tubing at Great Bear

Lazer Tubing is returning Saturday to Great Bear Ski Valley. Expect a “cosmic experience” with a night of lights and music while racing down the Great Bear tubing hill. Tickets can be purchased for $22 at greatbearpark.com. Tubing will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 11 p.m., weather permitting. Tickets are limited, but Great Bear will be hosting multiple other Lazer Tubing events throughout the season.

Jan. 9: K9 Root Beer Keg Races

Technically it’s part of Frosty Frolics, but we thought it deserved its own mention. From 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, bring your canine racer to Spencer Dog Park on the southwest side of Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 for the first annual Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation K9 Root Beer Keg Races. Each participating dog will be put into different weight classes depending on the size of the contestant. Each furry competitor will wear a harness attached to an appropriately sized root beer keg to pull past a designated finish line. The fastest dog in each class wins. No registration required.

Jan. 9: Wibit Action Tower and Wiggle Bridge

Wibit events are back at the Midco Aquatic Center. This time, there will be an Action Tower and a Wiggle Bridge for kids to play on. As usual, the event will be in the Sanford Health 50-meter pool, and participants will need a daily swim pass or pay daily admission to enjoy the activities. The Wibits will be available from 1 to 5 p.m.

Jan. 10: Open Mic Night at Remedy Brewing

An open mic night is coming to Remedy Brewing Co. for the new year. Hosted by Bryan Jensen and supported by Sioux Falls Strings Studio, Open Mic Night will begin at 7 every Monday night, the first one on Jan. 10. At Open Mic, you’re encouraged to either play a cover, an original or even tell a joke. The only equipment provided will be an acoustic guitar and sound equipment, but participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment as well. Open Mic is open to all ages and free for everyone. No advance sign-up is required.
