Aug. 23: Swan-a-thon

SuFu Creative Events, 218 W. 13th St., will host a swan-a-thon for Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety. The origami swan is a symbol of transformation and hope, and the goal is to make a flock of 2,700 to hang from the ceiling of the new dining hall on the Sioux Falls campus and later at the new Black Hills campus. Swans will be folded from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. There will be refreshments, music, a silent auction and prizes for the most swans folded.

Aug. 23: Live music

Dave and Julie of The Two Tracks, an  Americana band from Sheridan, Wyoming, will perform live at Rehfeld’s Underground, 431 N. Phillips Ave. Doors open at  7 p.m. Friday with the music beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is free, although a freewill offering will be taken to collect donations for the South Dakota Friends of Traditional Music, the evening’s sponsoring organization.

Aug. 24: Bird watching

The Sioux Falls Bird Club will host a field trip at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Outdoor Campus, 4500 S. Oxbow Ave. It’s a chance to look for migrating songbirds, then check nearby wetlands for shorebirds. The hike also will include western Sioux Falls to seek the Mississippi kites that have been present this summer. It should end about midday, and you do not need to be a club member to attend.

Aug. 24: Mum sale

It’s almost autumn, and if you want your house to look festive, consider attending the Sioux Falls Kiwanis annual mum sale. It will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Natural Beauty Greenhouse, 46844 264th St. – go west on 12th Street, north on Ellis Road, then west to the greenhouse. You’ll also be able to tour the greenhouse.

Aug. 24: Beer release

Severance Brewing Co., 701 N. Phillips Ave., is ready for Oktoberfest with a popular beer that has a special twist. Smokertoberfest, Severance’s smoked marzen lager, will be on tap starting at noon Saturday. Can’t make it then? It soon will be on the shelves at area retailers in 16-ounce four-packs.

Aug. 24: 605 Made Night Market

It’s time for amazing handmade items, entertainment, food and fun at Saturday’s 605 Made Night Market. It will take place in  the Raven parking lot at Phillips Avenue and Sixth Street. Hours are 3 to 9 p.m., and admission is free.

Aug. 25: Fiesta block party

Augustana Lutheran Church and Pueblo de Dios will host their annual Fiesta Block Party on Sunday. A bilingual worship service will take place outdoors at 11 a.m. with a blessing of school backpacks and students. Latin American food and music will follow. Police and fire crews also will attend. If the weather is bad, the celebration will move indoors.

Coming up: Aug. 29

Heading to Huron and the South Dakota State Fair? Aug. 29 is the 25th annual Value Added Agriculture Center Day, running from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. About 20 vendors will highlight local foods and products,- including South Dakota meats, ice cream, produce, jams and jellies, honey, salsa and sorghum flour, among other products. Participants can network and take in several mini-seminars and local food demonstrations. The event concludes with local Berrybrook Diary Nook ice cream, in cooperation with Your South Dakota Dairy Producers.
