The week ahead: Feb. 15-21
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
Feb. 15: Local history
You may not know much about Sioux Falls’ early history with Syrian Muslims who went from peddlers to grocers in the city. Sioux Falls resident Sam Ogdie, who is of Syrian descent, aims to change that with a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Old Courthouse Museum. Sponsored by the Minnehaha County Historical Society, he will use stories from his Syrian grandparents and research from the book “Muslims in the Heartland.” The presentation is free.

Feb. 15-18: Original plays
The Premiere Premieres is a professionally produced, one-of-a-kind production by The Premiere Playhouse featuring two one-act plays written by local playwrights. A panel selected the plays during a one-day stage-reading festival. “Comfortably Single” is a fresh take on the rom-com. “Hearing” is about a personal hearing before a draft board as the Vietnam War draws to a close. The performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Orpheum Theater Center. Call the Washington Pavilion at 605-367-6000 to reserve tickets, or purchase them online. Students tickets and group rates are available.

Feb. 17: Art mixer
Vishnu Bunny and Third Eye Gallery will present Happening — An Art Mixer from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Ken’s Korner, 918 W. Sixth St. The purpose is to open up some conversation and camaraderie with a little art mixer. The first keg is on them; you should bring ideas, thoughts or beefs. There probably also will be music.

Feb. 17: Wakefield
The four-piece rock band Wakefied, based in Sioux Falls, toured extensively throughout the Midwest in the 1980s. Join them for their 50th anniversary party Saturday at The District, 4521 W. Empire Place. It will begin at 7 p.m. Special guest is Ron Keel with Silicon Heaven as the opening band.

Feb. 17: Comedy and hypnotism
You are getting … amused! That will be the case if you attend Swinging Watch Entertainment, a comedy hypnotist show, Saturday at Falls Overlook Cafe, 825 N. Weber Ave. There will be an appetizer menu, with beer and wine also available for purchase. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20. Reserve your seat by emailing [email protected].

Feb. 18: BrunchFest
Breakfast and lunch equals brunch, and who doesn’t love it? That’s why Remedy Brewing Co., 401 E. Eighth St., is hosting its fourth annual BrunchFest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Four unique beers will be available, along with an all-you-can eat buffet from The Saucy Boyz in the kitchen. Find typical fare like pancakes, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, and more.
