April 18-20: Big Fish

A book and movie that was turned into a Broadway musical can be seen this week at the University of Sioux Falls. “Big Fish” tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman, and his son, Will. It will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday For tickets, click on this link.

April 19: Art shows

Two art shows will take place Friday. The heART of the City, featuring 2D, 3D and wearable art created by local artists of all ages and media, will offer an art show and voting from 5 to 6 p.m., a fashion show at 6:30 p.m. and an art show from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at Whittier Middle School. Visitors will be able to create something out of provided snack bags and cheer on the fashion show contestants. The event is free. It is a collaboration with BronzeAge Art Casting, Sioux Falls Arts Council, Whittier Middle School and The Little Stone Church. It’s part of an ongoing effort to uplift and support teachers and students through Love Your Neighborhood — Whittier Middle School. Cash donations or donations of individually packaged snacks will be accepted at the door.

ArtAbility is an art exhibit for artists with disabilities sponsored by the Sioux Falls Mayor’s Disability Awareness & Accessibility Review Board. ArtAbility is an opportunity to showcase artwork as a means of self-expression, while DAARB’s goal is to remove barriers for individuals with disabilities while promoting universal accessibility. The artist reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Underground by Rehfelds, 431 N. Phillips Ave.

April 19-21: Home expo

Have an itch to update your home this spring? The Sioux Falls Home Expo will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. The free event gives homeowners a chance to save on home improvement projects and meet with local and national vendors. For information, visit here.

April 20: Earth Day Festival

This free festival for all ages will run from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Great Bear Recreation Park, with music, lawn games, a family scavenger hunt and tote bag decorating. Get a mini planting kit and celebration sticker. Local environmental organizations will have booths to visit as well. No registration is required.

April 20: Party for the Planet

Clean up and have fun at both the Great Plains Zoo and Butterfly House & Aquarium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. At the zoo, participate in the pollinator garden cleanup and learn about the hoop house at 11:30 a.m. Get hands-on with make-and-take planters and wildflower seed bombs.

At the Butterfly House, join the Sertoma Park cleanup, and create your own bird feeders to help our feathered friends thrive. This event is included with admission at both facilities.

April 20: Garden forum

Sioux Falls’ Food Security and Healthy Eating Team is hosting Garden Week, a grassroots initiative taking place May 20-24. Its purpose is to bring people together in different neighborhoods to create gardens and promote community unity. To prepare, the team is hosting a gardening forum from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1700 E. Sixth St. The forum is a chance for people to come together and share ideas that will make Garden Week a success. To register or for information, visit siouxfallsgardens.org. Sioux Falls’ Food Security and Healthy Eating Team is a communitywide group facilitated by Sioux Falls Thrive.

April 20: ‘80s Party Night 

Pull your 1980s gear out of the closet, and get ready for a party. Myrtle’s Fur Vault & Bar, 208 S. Main Ave., next to Parker’s Bistro, will host the event with themed drinks and music beginning at 10 p.m.

April 22: Dance showcase

Champion Legacy Dance Academy will present its annual dance showcase featuring all teams age 4 and older and celebrating the graduating seniors. The Senor and Open teams will be cheered as they head to Orlando, Florida, for the USASF’s Dance Worlds April 26-29. The showcase will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at Harrisburg North Middle School. Admission at the door is $10 for age 6 to 54 and $7 for adults 55 and older.

Coming up: May 4

Rare by Design will host the third annual The Style Show: A Runway to Empower from 5 to 9 p.m. May 4 at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Sioux Falls. Ticket sales close April 26; you can purchase tickets here. The evening includes a social hour at 5 p.m., the fashion show and program at 6 p.m. and an after-party with drinks and hors d’oeuvres from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening is designed to raise awareness and financial support for Rare by Design, a nonprofit organization that works to create awareness, inclusion and representation for individuals with a rare disease or disability.
