Teacher appreciation, releasing lanterns for luck, other school news you’ll love
Amazing things happen in our schools every day — if you know where to look! Do you know some school news others would love? Let us know at [email protected].
Teacher Appreciation Week led to tons of fun celebrations.
When May the Fourth falls during Appreciation Week, you go with it as they did at Edison Middle School.

The Family Treats Homemade Ice Cream trailer paid a visit to Fred Assam Elementary. In honor of Staff Appreciation Week, Ryan Hofer of Horace Mann Insurance treated staff members to ice cream.

Teachers and staff at Robert Frost Challenge Center were able to go through a “store” and collect some goodies courtesy of the PTO.

And the team at Lowell Elementary got lunch courtesy of the PTO and Windy City Food Bites!

They celebrated with Scooter’s Coffee and treats from Scheels at George McGovern Middle School.

Here’s an appropriate way to say thanks at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary – they got lunch from a taco food truck too!

Love this show of appreciation too! Child Nutrition staff members across the state had a special day of recognition for “never missing a beat in the past year, preparing to-go lunches and taking extra steps to ensure that lunchrooms were safe for students.” Ag United selected 100 staff members to receive a Hy-Vee gift card and a gift bag as a thank-you – 27 of these heroes work in the Sioux Falls School District.

What a cool idea! Staff at Oscar Howe Elementary gathered and released lanterns into the sky. It’s considered good luck to release a sky lantern, which is symbolic of problems and worries floating away, the school said. “We are so grateful for all the amazing blessings in our life, and although this school year has come with many new challenges, we persevered together!”

Sign us up for this yummy way to learn about the phases of the moon. Third graders at St. Katharine Drexel Elementary used Oreos for their lesson.

Tri-Valley High School students took part in a multicultural celebration this week and could share any cultural information they wanted with their peers. These students volunteered to present information from their backgrounds regarding clothing styles, foods, traditional dances, games and anything else they wanted to share.

Third graders at St. Michael Elementary are reading “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. So their teacher organized a Spares and Pairs dance group to demonstrate and teach them the ins and outs of square dancing.

This definitely deserves a visit from the mayor! Remember last week’s Screen Time Challenge at Washington High School? Students reduced their screen time by more than double the original goal.

Now this is a memorable lesson! Kindergarteners at Sioux Falls Christian greet some baby chicks.
