Southeast Technical College enhances hands-on learning with new virtual reality equipment

Southeast Technical College is taking hands-on learning to the next level with the introduction of cutting-edge virtual reality technology across several programs. From painting vehicles to conducting traffic stops, students are gaining realistic, immersive experiences without leaving the classroom.

Two standout additions to the college’s VR offerings are the virtual paint sprayer in the collision repair and refinish technology program and the virtual vehicle simulator in the law enforcement program.
Painting in a virtual booth
In the collision program, students can train with a VR paint sprayer system that simulates the experience of painting a vehicle in a spray booth. The system allows users to practice paint techniques, adjust spray patterns and receive instant feedback — all without using any actual paint.
“The VR paint sprayer gives our students a unique opportunity to perfect their techniques before stepping into a real spray booth,” instructor Dana Davis said. “It saves material, reduces waste and builds confidence. The realism is incredible — it reacts just like a real spray gun.”
This technology supports both beginners learning the fundamentals and advanced students refining their skills. By eliminating the need for costly paint and supplies during practice, it also helps lower program expenses and reduce environmental impact.
Simulated street experience for future officers
In the law enforcement program, students can experience realistic training scenarios through a VR vehicle simulator. This tool places students in fully interactive environments where they conduct traffic stops, respond to calls and practice tactical decision-making.

“The VR simulator gives our students a safe and controlled way to experience high-pressure situations,” instructor Richard Miller said. “They can run through scenarios that mirror real-life patrol experiences, and we can pause, review and coach them on the spot. It’s a powerful teaching tool.”

From improving communication skills to reinforcing procedural training, the simulator prepares students for the complexities of the field before they ever put on a uniform.
Commitment to innovation
These investments in virtual reality reflect Southeast Tech’s commitment to providing innovative, career-focused education. By integrating VR into technical training, the college ensures that students develop practical skills in a safe, modern learning environment.
“Hands-on learning is at the heart of what we do,” Davis said. “With VR, we’re enhancing that experience and giving our students more ways to succeed.”
As the workforce evolves, Southeast Technical College continues to adapt its programs to meet industry standards — ensuring graduates are not only job-ready but ahead of the curve.
