The Sioux Falls recreation trail will be expanded on the east side thanks to two donors contributing a combined $1.3 million.

The donation will fund a milelong expansion to connect Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue on the north side of the Big Sioux River.

It’s made possible by Jeff and Tammie Broin and the Ashby family.

“We are so grateful to the Broin and Ashby families for their generosity and vision,” Jennifer Kirby, chair of the Sioux Falls Parks Foundation, said in a statement. “Because of people like them, we are able to continue to make Sioux Falls a beautiful place to call home.”

The Sioux Falls Parks Foundation is an affiliate of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation that helps align philanthropic investment in the city parks system with community vision.

“This section of the path helps bring recreational opportunities to more people in northeastern Sioux Falls and is a priority trail corridor in the Sioux Falls Bicycle Master Plan,” said Don Kearney, director of parks and recreation for the city of Sioux Falls. “We are so grateful to the Ashby and Broin families for their generosity.”

The new section will extend the trail from Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue and include an elevated boardwalk area. The project is scheduled to begin construction in the spring.

“We want people to continue to enjoy all the beauty that Sioux Falls has to offer – and our recreational trail is a perfect place to do that,” Jeff Broin said. “We are grateful to work with the Ashby family and the Parks Foundation.”
