Sioux Empire Fair additions include art, food offerings

The Sioux Empire Fair begins its 84th year this weekend, with additions including everything from goat meat to art competitions.

The annual event runs Friday through Aug. 12.

In addition to the classic attractions — more than 50 carnival rides, livestock showcases, concerts and rodeo — the fair has some new offerings.

Art and craft competitions will include cash rewards and gift cards this year. A People’s Choice and honorable mention awards will be given along with Best of Show. The contest includes a junior and adult division with prizes up to $100. The Sioux Empire Fair will partner with Piper Arts to bring new special awards to the artwork class in the Arts Center. 

Fairgoers will find 48 food booths throughout the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Look for African food, freeze-dried candy, gyros, goat meat, inside-out cinnamon rolls and pineapple whip among the dishes that might be new to you at this year’s event.

Also new this year, bring your baking skills to the Great Bundt Cake Bake Off, sponsored by Cooks & Bakers Kitchen and Nordic Ware. There is a $200 prize package awaiting the winner. 

“We had a good year last year, “said Scott Wick, president and CEO of the Sioux Empire Fair. “With good weather and not too much heat, we should have another good year.”

The Billion Automotive main stage will feature performances by Hairball, Brothers Osborne, Eli Young Band, Roots & Boots and Whiskey Myers.

Another fun feature for this year: a high-energy show Aug. 11 by 406 FMX Freestyle Motocross, with riders from X-Games and Nitro Circus. 

Here are few deals to keep in mind: On Aug. 9, it’s Ag Appreciation Day, with free admission until 1 p.m. And on Aug. 10, go on carnival rides for $20 with half-price wristband day. The carnival operator is the same as last year, so many rides will be familiar.
