School news: From epic football game trip to special meeting with superintendent

Fifth grade student council members at R.F. Pettigrew Elementary had the chance to sit down and talk with Superintendent Jane Stavem last week. Topics included school lunches, cellphone and screen time and ideas for improvement within the district.

And speaking of memorable experiences, check this out. More than 100 football players and coaches from George McGovern and Whittier middle schools got to watch this weekend’s SDSU versus NDSU game, thanks to the Promising Futures Fund, SDSU admissions and athletics, and the SDSU Foundation.

“Most have never been on a college campus let alone attend a big game of two Division I rivals. They were well-behaved and so appreciative of this opportunity to be a part of something big,” the foundation wrote in a Facebook post.
“This is just the beginning. Our foundation is providing big experiences for roughly 7,000 kids in the Sioux Falls schools with the highest rates of poverty. These kids will open their eyes to new possibilities for their future. You cannot be what you cannot see. So excited to make this happen for these great kids.”

What a fun way to end the week! Students at Eugene Field Elementary enjoyed a performance by the music group Sheltered Reality — and each student got a glow stick to join in on the fun.

The annual Read for the Record Day was held recently, bringing guest readers into many schools. Students at Laura Wilder Elementary were lucky enough to have Police Chief Jon Thum stop by.

John Harris Elementary has some new signage as you enter the building. It displays the school’s Hurricane HERO core values of being Helpful, showing Excellence, having Respect and taking Ownership.

Way to pitch in! Students and staff at St. Lambert Elementary spent an afternoon last week raking the school and parish grounds.

It’s definitely Kleenex season — and not every classroom can take that supply for granted. Pastor Bill from First Baptist Church delivered a case of Kleenexes for each classroom at Lowell Elementary.

The generosity continued at Lowell with supplies for students from the Lions Club and gift bags for staff from First Lutheran Church.

Students at St. Michael Elementary got into the spirit of All Saints Day with Mass, a parade and carnival.

Love this! Thanks to Dave, a community volunteer, Rosa Parks Elementary has an after-school chess club. Dave teaches third through fifth graders the game of chess, and the club has drawn a diverse group of students of all abilities, boys and girls!
