Road construction season is winding down! Here’s our final look of the year at major projects done and wrapping up.

What’s done

Sixth Street: Work on Sixth Street between Interstate 229 and Sycamore Avenue was completed last week.

This project included full- and partial-depth concrete repairs, accessible curb ramp improvements, an asphalt overlay on the west end of the project and diamond grinding of the concrete surface to improve the ride on the east end of the project.

26th Street: Work on 26th Street between Cleveland and Alpine avenues was completed last week.

This project included storm drainage improvements, accessible curb ramp improvements and an asphalt overlay.

What’s underway

Marion Road: Marion Road between Memory Lane and County Highway 130 was reopened to traffic Friday. The permanent traffic signs will be installed this week. The light poles will be installed in December after they are received from the manufacturer.

41st & I-29: Work wrapped up for the season at the 41st Street and Interstate 29 interchange Friday. All lanes will be open to traffic for the winter.

The interchange will be converted to the diverging diamond configuration in the spring.

Benson & I-229: Work also wrapped up for the season at the Benson Road and Interstate 229 interchange Friday.

Benson Road east of I-229 is open, and all lanes will be open to traffic throughout the project for the winter.

Work will resume again in the spring, and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for the duration of the 2024 construction season.

What’s next

The city already is planning for 2024, but in the meantime, there will be snow to remove. Here’s a look at the winners of the Paint the Plow contest.

People’s Choice: Metro Communications.

Community organization: McCrossan Boys Ranch.

School: R.F. Pettigrew Elementary.

The winning plows will be on display in the Parade of Lights on Friday in downtown Sioux Falls.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Paint the Plow contest, attended the event and voted,” said Dustin Hansen, street operations manager for the city of Sioux Falls. “We look forward to this event every year. The painted plows bring much-needed color and creativity to the entire snow-fighters’ operation during the long winters.”
