Road Report: May 20, 2024

Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

41st & I-29: Work on the 41st Street and Interstate 29 interchange is nearing completion! Work is in progress on the channelizing islands, center median, traffic signals, landscaping, bridge painting and Carolyn Avenue cul-de-sac.

There continues to be no left turns allowed from the northbound off-ramp onto westbound 41st Street. Beginning today, traffic will be configured into a simplified version of the final diverging diamond configuration.

One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction. Eastbound traffic will remain in its current configuration on the north side of the bridge, while westbound traffic will be diverted to the south side of the bridge.

There is a public open house scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the former Verizon store at The Empire Mall. Enter through the door on the left-side of the food court canopy outside, or go through the food court entrance and to the left. Information about how to navigate through the diverging diamond interchange and a walkable demonstration mat will be available. The project team also will be available to answer questions. The Department of Transportation and the city of Sioux Falls both hope to see you there!

Sycamore Avenue: Concrete repairs on Sycamore Avenue between Arrowhead Parkway and Madison Street are making progress.

Work is nearing completion on the southbound lanes between Sixth Street and Arrowhead Parkway.

As soon as these repairs are complete, work will begin on repairs in the northbound lanes.

Later this summer, work will move to the segment between Sixth and Madison streets.

All work on this project is expected to be complete in November.

O’Gorman Drive: On May 15, O’Gorman Drive closed just north of 41st Street to allow crews to work on new utilities. The work is expected to be complete in a week.

Swenson Drive: On May 16, Swenson Drive closed on the west side of Shirley Avenue to allow crews to perform repairs on the concrete valley gutter. Motorists should use 34th Street and Carolyn Avenue to enter and exit the neighborhood. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.

Minnesota Avenue: The outside northbound lane and the northbound right turn lane on Minnesota Avenue closed at Eighth Street on May 16 to allow construction crews to perform storm drainage repairs. Northbound traffic will be maintained on the inside driving lane at all times. This work is expected to be complete in approximately one week.

Selkirk Trail: On May 17, Selkirk Trail closed on the west side of Paisley Lane to allow crews to perform repairs on the concrete valley gutter. Motorists should use Campbell Trail to enter and exit the neighborhood. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.

What’s next

Beginning today:

• 12th Street will be closed between Charlotte and Kennedy avenues to allow crews to perform storm drainage repairs. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.
• The southernmost eastbound lane on 41st Street will be closed between Western and Grange avenues. TSB Communications will be working on its poles. This work is anticipated to be complete later that day.
• The northernmost eastbound lane and parking lane on 11th Street will be closed east of Minnesota Avenue. MJ Dalsin Roofing will be setting a crane for roof work on the adjacent property. This work is anticipated to be completed in three days.
• Vision Circle will be closed at the west end near the cul-de-sac. Johnson Dirt Works will be working on new utilities. The work is expected to be complete in a couple days.

Beginning on Tuesday, Cavalier Avenue will be closed between the south leg of Colonial Court and Liberator Circle. Johnson Dirt Works will be working on new utilities. The work is expected to be complete in a couple of days.
