Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Arrowhead Parkway: The work on Arrowhead Parkway between Gordon Drive and Foss Avenue is complete.

26th Street: The work on 26th Street west of Marion Road is complete.

Western Avenue: Both northbound lanes of Western Avenue at 49th Street are now open.

What’s underway

41st Street & I-29: Marion Road south of 41st Street is expected to reopen to traffic in mid- to late June. Crews are working on grading and graveling ahead of paving operations.

Temporary intersection closures on 41st Street west of I-29 will continue periodically to allow crews to reconstruct the street surfacing. Temporary closures of Terry Avenue, Cathy Avenue and Gateway Boulevard at 41st Street will alternate; only one intersection will be closed at a time.

Phillips Avenue: Xcel Energy is working to upgrade its facilities along Phillips Avenue between Eighth and Ninth streets. Westbound Ninth is closed, with traffic being detoured to Eighth. One lane of eastbound traffic is being maintained on Ninth. No parking is allowed on Phillips between Eighth and Ninth streets. Work began June 2, and is expected to take about one month to complete.

Minnesota Avenue: The first concrete pour on Minnesota Avenue happened late last week between Russell and Brookings streets.

After the concrete gains sufficient strength, crews will work to connect the side streets and construct the sidewalks.

Underground utility work continues between Brookings and Second streets.

What’s next

Kiwanis Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane on Kiwanis Avenue will be closed between Bailey and Madison streets. Work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Bridge inspections: Beginning today, several bridges in the Sioux Falls area are slated for regularly scheduled biannual inspections. This work will entail lane closures to allow crews to use a snooper truck. Traffic will be maintained through the work zone.

Weather permitting, the work schedule is as follows:

  • Monday: Russell Street bridges over the Big Sioux River.
  • Tuesday: 10th Street bridge downtown over the railroad tracks.
  • Wednesday: Cliff Avenue bridge south of I-229 over the river and the Bahnson Avenue bridge north of Rice Street over the river.
  • Thursday: Minnesota Avenue bridge by the airport over the river and Benson Road bridge east of Minnesota over the river.
  • Friday: Cliff Avenue bridge south of 10th Street over the river, 41st Street bridge by O’Gorman High School over the river and 12th Street bridge west of Grange Avenue over the railroad tracks.

33rd Street: Beginning on Tuesday, 33rd Street will be closed between Pepper Ridge and Chapelwood avenues to allow crews to reconstruct the intersection of 33rd and Sycamore Avenue. Traffic on Sycamore will be shifted to the west side of the intersection and will be reduced to one lane in each direction. As construction progresses through the summer, Sycamore traffic will shift to the east side of the road and 33rd will remain closed between Pepper Ridge and Chapelwood. The intersection work is anticipated to be complete by early August.
