Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Western Avenue: The intersection projects at 18th and Western and at 22nd and Western are complete, and both intersections are open to traffic. There will be additional work and closures along Western  later this summer to allow crews to apply a slurry seal to help preserve the pavement surface.

14th Street: The street closure on 14th Street near Fifth Avenue is now complete, and 14th Street is open to traffic.

Crews were working with Ellis & Eastern Railroad to replace the railroad crossing.

What’s underway

Bahnson Avenue: North Bahnson Avenue closed at 60th Street North on June 7 to allow crews to complete road improvements.  This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

41st & I-29: The southbound on-ramp from 41st Street onto Interstate 29 reopened June 9.

Traffic was also switched onto the south side of the 41st Street bridge over I-29 on June 9.

41st & Shirley: Shirley Avenue north of 41st Street remains closed until late June.

Concrete was poured last week near 41st and Shirley as well.  The overall project is still on track to be fully complete in late spring/early summer of 2024.

57th Street: Construction is underway on 57th Street east of Veterans Parkway to prepare for future development in this area.

Crews are working on installing the storm drainage system ahead of paving later this year.

The project will be similar to the segment west of Veterans Parkway – concrete pavement with two lanes in each direction, a center median, turn lanes at the intersections, sidewalks and streetlights.

Work is expected to be complete in October.

Cliff Avenue: Work started last week to install an asphalt overlay on Cliff Avenue between 11th and 26th streets. Work focused on milling, or grinding down, the outside edge of the existing pavement so the new layer of asphalt matches the existing curb elevation.

Asphalt paving will begin this week. The overall project will be completed in mid-July.

What’s next

41st Street: Beginning today, the outside westbound lane on 41st Street will be closed from Grinnell Avenue to Hidden Place to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. One westbound lane of traffic will be maintained during construction. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Western Avenue: Beginning today, the southbound and northbound lanes on Western Avenue will be narrowed and shifted to the east between Oak and 31st streets to allow crews to perform a concrete repair. One lane of traffic in each direction on Western will be maintained during construction. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

41st & Linedrive: Beginning today, the outside eastbound lane and the right turn lane on 41st Street will be closed at Linedrive Avenue to allow crews to perform concrete and traffic signal work.  This work is expected to be complete later this summer.

Sixth Street: Beginning today, the westbound lanes of Sixth Street will be closed between Linwood Court and Sycamore Avenue to allow crews to perform concrete joint repairs, partial depth concrete repairs, and curb and gutter repairs.  One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the eastbound lanes.  In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures on Sixth Street will vary between Shepherd and Sycamore avenues. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times. Access to businesses, parks and schools will be maintained. Access to side streets will be maintained if possible. This work is expected to be complete in late October.
