Road Report: April 13, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
85th & I-29: Crews are making progress at the new 85th Street and Interstate 29 interchange.

Work is focused on grading, water main, storm drainage and bridge structure work.

Traffic on southbound Interstate 229 is reduced to one lane west of I-29 and will remain that way throughout the project.

Traffic on I-29 will be minimally impacted; however, there will be intermittent lane closures as construction progresses, and isolated night-time closures will occur as the bridge is being constructed.

All work is expected to be complete in late 2027.

Russell Street: Concrete repair work is in progress on Russell Street.

Work on this project includes full and partial depth concrete repairs, curb and gutter repairs and joint resealing.

Although the work currently is limited to the eastbound lanes of Russell Street between West and Minnesota avenues, work will occur on both eastbound and westbound Russell between Interstate 29 and Minnesota over the course of the construction season.

All work on this project is expected to be complete in late October.

What’s next
Russell & Louise/Westport: Beginning today, the outside and center lanes of Russell Street in both directions will be closed at the intersection of Louise Avenue/Westport Avenue to allow crews to perform concrete curb and gutter repairs in preparation for an asphalt overlay. One lane of traffic will be maintained in the inside lanes in both directions on Russell. Turning lanes will be maintained at the intersection where possible. Additionally, the outside lanes of Louise and Westport also will be closed at the intersection of Russell Street. Traffic on Louise and Westport will be maintained in the inside lanes in both directions. Turning lanes will be maintained where possible. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures at the intersection will vary. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times. Work at this intersection is expected to be complete in late June. Work on Russell between Louise and Minnesota avenues will continue through October.
Minnesota Avenue: Beginning today, the outside northbound lane of Minnesota Avenue will be closed between 31st and 33rd streets to allow crews to work on renovations to an adjacent building. The sidewalk on the east side of Minnesota also will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to Dakota Avenue. The lane closure is expected to be in place for one to two weeks. The sidewalk will remain closed until the end of April.
Minnesota Avenue: Beginning on Thursday, southbound traffic on Minnesota Avenue will be reduced to one lane near Hanger Street to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. The location of the lane closure will vary as the work progresses. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
12th Street: Beginning on Thursday, westbound traffic on 12th Street will be reduced to one lane between Kiwanis and Westport avenues to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. The location of the lane closure will vary as the work progresses. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
12th Street: Beginning on Thursday, westbound traffic on 12th Street will be reduced to one lane between Ebenezer Avenue and Marion Road to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. The location of the lane closure will vary as the work progresses. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning on Friday, Cliff Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction at 20th Street to allow crews to perform underground utility work as part of the 20th Street reconstruction project. The work on Cliff is expected to be complete in late May.
20th Street: Beginning on Friday, 20th Street will be reduced to one-way westbound traffic only between Cliff and Ninth avenues to allow crews to reconstruct the street. Work on this project includes underground utility improvements, concrete surfacing, sidewalks and street lighting. Access to all Avera McKennan parking ramps on 20th Street will be maintained at all times but must be accessed via Cliff Avenue. Pedestrian routes will be signed, and audible information devices will be provided to assist those navigating the pedestrian detour. Access to Avera McKennan’s emergency department off of Seventh Avenue will not be impacted; however, motorists are encouraged to use either 17th or 26th streets to access Seventh Avenue. This work is expected to be completed in early November.
Cliff & I-229: Beginning on Friday, traffic on Cliff Avenue will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction at Interstate 229 to allow crews to begin removing the existing northbound bridge on I-229. As part of this work, Cliff Avenue will be fully closed overnight on April 17-18 and again on April 18-19. Traffic should use Minnesota Avenue as a detour route during these times. The lane closures on Cliff are expected to be in place for approximately one week.
Louise Avenue: Beginning on April 20, the outside northbound lane of Louise Avenue will be closed between 49th and 53rd streets to allow crews to make accessible sidewalk improvements. Work impacting the northbound lanes is expected to be complete in about one month.
Arrowhead Parkway: Beginning on April 20, Arrowhead Parkway will be fully closed between Veterans Parkway and Hein Avenue to allow crews to complete construction on the east side of the Arrowhead Parkway and Veterans Parkway intersection. Traffic should use Six Mile Road to either Madison or 41st streets as alternate routes. Traffic on Veterans will be maintained at all times. This work is expected to be complete, and Arrowhead reopened to traffic east of Veterans, in approximately six weeks. Once this work on the east side of Veterans is complete, Arrowhead will be fully closed between Highline Avenue and west of the intersection of Veterans Parkway to allows crews to complete the project. All work is expected to be complete late this year.
