Making the decision to transition a child to a new school can be daunting for any parent. In the case of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, this decision was met with enthusiasm and positive outcomes for one family.

We had the opportunity to speak with Kelli Moffitt, a parent who shared her family’s journey and experiences with the transition to both O’Gorman Junior High and O’Gorman High School.
Her answers helped us understand what prompted the family’s decision to transfer to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, the challenges they faced, the successes they witnessed and the unwavering support they received from the school community.
Deciding factors
When asked about the deciding factor for transferring to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, Moffitt said the family’s older son expressed a desire to attend after a tour of O’Gorman High School.

The welcoming atmosphere and the positive feedback from peers who already were enrolled played a significant role in their decision-making process. “He decided quickly after the tour that he wanted to attend O’G,” Moffitt said. The family’s younger son eventually embraced the move for his seventh grade year, inspired by his brother’s experience.
Perspective on transition
Reflecting on the children’s transition to O’Gorman Junior High and O’Gorman High School, Moffitt emphasized the sense of community and the unique opportunities the school offered.
She highlighted the exposure to a more nurturing and safe-learning environment compared with their previous school experience.

“There are things that I don’t worry about them being exposed to as much as they were in the public school setting,” she said.
Challenges and successes
While acknowledging that no transition is entirely devoid of challenges, Moffitt expressed how her family hadn’t encountered significant obstacles during the process.
Instead, they focused on the academic successes their sons achieved, attributing them to the school’s high expectations and supportive environment.

“I think the biggest success for both boys is stronger academic expectations and outcomes for them,” she said.
Being able to compare expectations between different middle schools, “the high expectations are a benefit to my boys as students,” she added.
Community support
Moffitt also emphasized the invaluable support the family received from the staff at O’Gorman Junior High and O’Gorman High School. She praised the accessibility of teachers and administrators, noting their responsiveness even outside regular school hours. This sense of community made them feel supported and valued as parents.
“I don’t think that most people who have been in the system for their children’s whole school life always understand how amazing the community is here,” she said.

Transitioning to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools was marked by a sense of belonging, academic excellence and unwavering support from the school community. For this family, the decision to entrust their children’s education to O’Gorman Junior High and O’Gorman High School proved to be a rewarding and enriching experience.
