McKennan Park band shell ready for next century of life

The McKennan Park band shell is ready for its next 100 years.

Battered by years of freeze-thaw cycles and water damage, the century-old band shell received repairs to the exterior as well as patching soffits and a fresh coat of paint. A 2-inch layer of concrete was laid on the stage, and drainage improvements were made to improve overall maintenance.

The hidden cove lighting for the stage was updated with LED lighting, and the overall look of the lighting improved to look less utilitarian and more historically fitting. Landscape uplighting was added around the building, and structural improvements were made to support the additional weight of the new stage construction.

“We are thrilled with the final product,” said Tory Miedema, park development specialist for the city of Sioux Falls.

“The architect and contractor did a great job making much-needed structural repairs, window and door replacements, roof and drainage repairs, and landscaping enhancements all while preserving the historical significance of the band shell. They also worked well with the local Board of Historical Preservation throughout the process to ensure a great result.”

The city is still waiting for new windows and doors to be installed, estimated for mid-July.

The band shell was donated to the city by the Cosmopolitan Club in 1926 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The band shell also hosts theater performances for all ages.

“It is back to its normal summer schedule,” Miedema said. “McKennan Park is bustling with activity as usual.”

Next up for McKennan Park: Replacement of it wading pool, which if approved could start design this year to be ready for construction at the end of next swim season.
