Humane Society aims to get word out about revamped volunteer program, other policies
After several years of more restrictive policies for volunteering, fostering and adopting at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, staff members say it’s time for a revamp.
Lexy Nuttbrock took over the volunteer program in August and looks forward to giving it a fresh new start.
The facility will showcase that this fall, hosting an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 to share what’s new with everything from fostering to adopting.

Over time, people in the community have expressed frustration about lingering pandemic-era policies that were too strict, Nuttbrock said.
“Some of our restrictions haven’t been in place for a while, so now those people can come see that’s not the case anymore,” she said.
For example, walk-in adoptions returned in 2023 after requiring an appointment during the pandemic.
Adoption and volunteer applications now are available online.
“They’re on the website now so instead of having to go through a class and getting emailed the application, people can apply any time of day, all year long,” she explained.
Volunteer activities include animal cuddling, hanging out with the cats, walking through the dogs, rescue dog recess, fostering, live music therapy – and more.
Nuttbrock said the humane society thrives because of its community of volunteers.

“We love our volunteers,” Nuttbrock said. “The workload gets taken off of the staff members, along with positive promotion. They’re crucial to our success.”
The open house next week will include guided tours, food trucks, local pet businesses and more.
“It’s a great opportunity to see all the work we’re doing with the community,” Nuttbrock said.
“Same with our rescue partners. We all rely on each other, so even if you support one over the other, in the long run you’re helping all of us. If you don’t want to see us, come see them.”
