Making a difference starts with one person.

“Even though I am only one person, I can make a difference and inspire generosity,” said Patrick Barnett, a senior at O’Gorman High School.

Barnett is working toward earning the prestigious Eagle Scout rank, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America. A crucial step in this journey is leading a community service project.

“It’s about giving back to the community and demonstrating the leadership skills I’ve developed,” he explained.

For his project, Barnett chose to support LifeScape, a nonprofit empowering children and adults with disabilities.

“Steve Watkins, LifeScape’s CEO, introduced me to the organization’s mission and inspired me to make them the focus of my efforts,” Barnett said.

He reached out to the community by sending 250 letters detailing his project and how donations would benefit LifeScape. The response was overwhelming.

“Within days, I received emails, phone calls and texts from people eager to help,” he said.

LifeScape’s volunteer coordinator, Becky Sluiter, was impressed by the outpouring of support. “Patrick is so kind-hearted and thoughtful. The response to his request speaks volumes about the respect people have for him,” she said.

Delivery day was a highlight as one of the children LifeScape supports, Dom, eagerly helped unload the trailer.

“I had fun and helped carry stuff,” Dom said. “I have fun and feel safe at LifeScape.”

Barnett’s family joined Dom and LifeScape staff in organizing the hundreds of donations.

The results exceeded Barnett’s initial goals. “I aimed to raise $1,000 and collect 500 pounds of clothing, but we received 600 pounds of clothing, over $5,000 in Amazon gift cards, hygiene products, winter coats, blankets and more,” he said.

“I believe in LifeScape’s mission — empowering people to live their best life. It aligns with the values of Eagle Scouts: to lift others up every day,” he continued.

His project not only made an impact on LifeScape but also inspired generosity across the community, proving that one person’s efforts can create a ripple effect of kindness.
