Downtown Sioux Falls to launch Lively & Beautiful Streets initiative

You’ll soon start to see changes in downtown Sioux Falls designed to make it a better environment for pedestrians.

Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. recently received a Community Challenge Grant from AARP South Dakota, which it will use as the catalyst for its Lively & Beautiful Streets, or LABS initiative, one of seven nationwide projects designed to focus on “equitable engagement to reconnect communities,” according to a statement from DTSF.

The project will focus on downtown streets to create an environment where people can experience slower traffic, safer crossings and a more hospitable pedestrian realm. DTSF will coordinate teams of volunteers to paint curb extensions, also known as bump-outs.

“We expect these additional bump-outs will create an immediate and tangible improvement to more easily connect residents and visitors throughout downtown,” said Joe Batcheller, DTSF president. “DTSF is grateful for the wonderful community partners who help enliven the heart of our city and make downtown a better place for everyone to experience.”

According to AARP, the bump-outs will be an inexpensive, effective way to support pedestrian and bike safety.

“AARP South Dakota is committed to working with local leaders to improve residents’ quality of life through tangible changes,” state director Erik Gaikowski said. “We are proud to collaborate with this year’s grantees as they make immediate improvements in their communities to jump-start long-term change, especially for South Dakotans 50 and over.”
