Downtown Sioux Falls plans new winter event

A new event is being developed to bring people downtown this winter.

Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. had offered a grant to an organization that wanted to take on an idea, but when none came together, the selection committee decided to create a committee-driven event.

DTSF president Joe Batcheller compared it to how the St. Patrick’s Day parade is organized and run. DTSF is serving as facilitator, adviser, promoter and fiscal agent.

“The gist of it is a day filled with winter-themed games and activities on the last Saturday of February,” he said. “Details are still being hashed out, but we anticipate many activities to take place at Fawick Park.”

The idea spawned from the annual Corporate Cup that used to be held at the YMCA.

“The committee’s intention is to grow the event into a friendly team competition that businesses, friends and families can get involved with,” Batcheller said.

“Our goal is to build community and have fun by leveraging one of Sioux Falls’ greatest natural resources: winter! We anticipate the event will take a couple years to ramp up but will eventually become a draw for downtown and help drive foot traffic to businesses.”

The annual Winter Carnival is scheduled Feb. 5-13 with events throughout the city, including a couple downtown.
